Be careful with your engagement ring, it can chip

the herald ukHead on over to The Herald for some misreporting on celebrity engagement rings and a useful warning. “Colin Montgomerie’s old missus Eimear had her £12,000 engagement ring nicked while putting on hand cream at a Ralph Lauren shop at Goodwood Golf Course recently.

People are not always as careful as they should be with their diamond engagement ring. The famous phrase, Diamonds are Forever, and the knowledge that Diamonds are the Hardest Substance on Earth give some the false impression that they are virtually indestructible. They are not. They are the hardest natural substance on Earth. Which means they won’t scratch easily. They are also very durable. But a strong smack against another durable object and they can chip.

As a side fact, diamond dealers carry diamonds in little blue paper pouches called briefkas (a Yiddish term). Sometimes culets can chip and a bit of scratching can happen because there are multiple diamonds in the pouch. It doesn’t happen that often, but occasionally you hear a story or two.

As for the article, if you want to know more realistic details about the current engagement ring Monty the Golfer gave his new fiancee, look here.
