You may have heard that Leona Helmsley died. The Palm Beach Post revisits an old mystery about the Helmsleys that was never solved. She was stabbed in the middle of the night. People speculate that an ex-employee did it out of revenge, but to this day it is unclear who did it.
Van Cleef has been mentioned numerous times in relation to the death of Helmsley. You see, she was charged with not paying taxes on several hundred thousand in jewelry she bought from Van Cleef. A housekeeper of hers testified that she said “only the little people pay taxes.” Two store officers at Van Cleef plead guilty of a scheme whereby taxes were avoided by claiming that jewelry was mailed to wealthy clients’ out of state addresses. Leona was given immunity in the case.
In a separate story on the same page of the Palm Beach news story, a former Van Cleef salesman, Ron Viejo, may stand to inherit millions pending a will battle, from another Heiress, Gloria Wolosoff, who is in the hospital and suffering from dementia.
