Oldest known Diamonds just found in Australia challenge theories of Earth’s Formation

diamondSome big Diamond News just in. Earth is thought by scientists to be about 4.5 billion years old. Diamonds are thought to have formed about 500 million years later. That is, until some Diamonds were found in Western Australia. They have been dated as being about 4.25 billion years old. Which means the Earth cooled a lot faster than previously assumed.

See the attached picture. If you’ve spent some time looking at diamonds under a microscope, you are used to seeing crystal inclusions inside a diamond. It is funny to look at a piece of Zircon and see a Diamond Crystal as the “inclusion”.
