Hi all,

When the different dealers here talk about branded H&As, and why they carry certain ones, the only difference (in the stones) I recall being mentioned is "consistency."

If I understand correctly, brands are different cutting houses which decide to do their own marketing of their best diamonds; there are cutters cutting H&As which are not branded (so not all unbranded H&As are branded "rejects"?). Since some cutters are able to produce H&A stones of more consistent quality than others, this is what creates differences in consistency.

A consistent brand helps a dealer by saving her time in sorting through particular stones deciding whether or not she's going to buy them (and by providing marketing materials). But since, as a consumer, I should look carefully at whatever stone I eventually purchase, how does branding help *me*? Aren't I just better off looking at unbranded stones for one that would have been branded had it been cut by someone else and saving the extra $$$?

I've leanred a lot about diamonds, especially eightstar, reading this board...maybe we'll start an H&A thread yet!

Consistency is important. It can be a time/money saver.

There are subtle diferences between all the H&A's. Some have flanges and some don't in a viewer. I wonder if these differences are meaningful.

They are all beautifuly made diamonds.

Sounds like you enjoy the hunt. If that is right I say now that you have seen many H&A's you are ready to go. You now know the look you want and I have a hunch you will do well.

Rockdoc,

Thanks for your great reply. I think it added two things to my understanding of H&As, and I just want to check to be sure.

1. The different brands have different cut styles which give rise to slightly different H&A patterns. So someone with a lot of experience might be able to identify the H&A brand just by looking at the H&A pattern?

This is neat, but I haven't noticed it before. Does someone have a couple H&A viewer images they could post to illustrate this?

2. I had understood consistency to mean stone-to-stone consistency. But your response made it sound as those within-stone consistency (min-max girdle thickness, crown angle, etc) varies widely, too. Is is this sort of consistency I, as a consumer, are getting with the branded stone?

jbacon: Thanks. I do love the hunt. I started out just hoping to get a nice stone my lady will like, and hopefully not get ripped off in the process, but this has turned out to be more interesting and more stimulating than I expected...it's fun!
