Diamond Purchase - Advise Please
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 07-30-08 , 01:42 PM

Hi Everyone,

I am planning on buying an engagement ring by a local jeweller (not a big name brand), who has been in business for 25 years. I live in Toronto, ON, Canada, and the jewellery store is called "Josephine Jewellers" (if you have bought a diamond from than any reviews are appreciated.

These are the specs of my diamond, can you please tell me what you guys think and is it worth the price?

Shape: Round Brilliant
Carat: 1.80
Colour: E
Clarity: SI1
Cut: Ideal Cut

Its a heart and arrows

He is giving it to me for 17500 (If I get the ring setting and wedding band, it is a total of 20 000 (with tax: grand total).

Can you please let me know if this is a good price for this?

Thank you so much!!!

The price sounds good as long as the stone has a GIA or AGS lab report and excellent polish and symmetry with ideal cut proportions. On the other hand if it is an EGL graded or IGI or some other lab report, not so good.

thanks so much!!!

If I get more detailed specs would that help or has what I listed so far sound like a good deal.

I'm going in today and aksing for a GIA lab report, if it isn't, can I request one? and than wait to purchase? or should I pay a deposit and than wait for the report? in case someone else is willing to purchase it

If it doesn't have a GIA lab report, I would pass on the deal. They run alot less. I doubt it would come back the same grade from GIA.

I'm going to ask the jeweller today if they use GIA.

They gave me a pamphlet that says G (diamond sign) S laboratories, and than inside they talk about GS Laboratories (GSL), is this the same thing? or completely different? how reliable?

Thank you so much!!

GSL is completely different and not as reliable as GIA.

Hi,

Okay, so I spoke with the jeweller today and he told me that they used GemScan to grade the diamond, I live in Toronto, ON Canada, what do you guys think about this alongst with the stats mentioned above?

Also, he was quite hesitant about GIA grading and said it would cost 600-700 dollars to send it out, is this reasonable?

Thank you!

Hi Lucid,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if we have heard it once on this forum,we have heard it a million times.

that some second or third tier lab graded diamond is just as strictly graded as a GIA stone and that a lucky novice was going to beat the experts at the diamond grading game

It may very well be a very nice diamond, but then there are very nice G or H color and SI-2 or even I-1 clarity diamonds.

Jan is absolutely right. IMO, there is no way that this stone would come back from GIA the same grade...

btw, the dealer is bluffing about sending it to GIA

Brian

I believe it is an excuse not to get you one with a GIA lab report. I think they know that GIA won't give it the same grade.

thank you so much for your opinions I really appreciate it!

Do you guys think I should call him on his bluff or leave it alone!

Also, if I want a GIA report done by another jeweller, how much does it actually cost to send it out? I found another jeweller but this one in a mall and more reputable and they Grade using EGO or EGL can't recall and he mentioned that they would grade by GIA if I wanted for 500 and if the grade they give was lower they would refund all my money: is this worth it? the price b/c at people's jeweller they mentioned they would do a GIA report for 60 dollars.

Thank you!

They can't do a GIA lab report. The stone has to be sent to GIA at one of their locations either in California or New York. Don't get an appraisal mixed up with a lab report. If you have a stone in the 1.70 ct. range it's going to be about $200 to get a GIA lab report. So I'm thinking that are not talking about a GIA lab report. There are plenty of stones available that already have GIA lab reports. Most well cut diamonds of legitimate color and clarity grades either have a GIA or AGS lab report. Such as this one:

Take a look at what a GIA lab report looks like.

You don't really have to mess around with people that don't sell stones with GIA or AGS lab reports and send stones in etc.

Thanks so much!

The jeweller said he would send it to GIA for 600-700 dollars, I thought that was too much!!!

Your info has been most informative and most appreciated!!!

I am definitely not going back to that jeweller!!

I recently received my engagement ring, which I must say is absolutely gorgeous. We did get it from a better known dealer in Maryland. It is certified by UGS (Universal Gemological Services) and is an affiliate of EGL USA. The cut of my ring is a rectangular modified brilliant, weight is 1.51 ct., clarity is VVS1, color is J and no fluorescents. It is set in a platinum Tacori setting with pave diamonds half way around the band. My fiancé paid $6100 with a $2,000 trade of another mounting that we had. Our insurance value of the ring is close to 20K. I have had other dealers tell me that they can’t believe that my ring is a J in color. My point is we did a lot of research to find the perfect ring for the money. Personal, from the research that we have done I feel that you would be paying too much for that ring. If you have the time I would search a little more. I hope this helps. Best regards.
