Will this fit in a stock setting?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-22-08 , 04:20 PM

Hi! I pick up my e-ring stone on Thursday (I FINALLY made up my mind -- this has taken me ages). It's a purple spinel, and it was cut by Jeff White of JL White Gemstones. I'll attach a pic.

It is 2.15 carats and measures 8.1 mm.

My question is this -- will I have to get a custom setting or will the stone likely fit into a stock setting? I would really like it to be set in a simple 6-prong white gold solitaire... What do you all think?

UGH... I can't get the right pics to attach, for some reason!

ETA: Yey! I figured it out! Please let me know what you think of the stone.

It should fit in a stock setting. Just make sure to put it in a basket type setting versus a tiffany style. The reason is that in colored gemstones if you put it in a tiffany style prong, the prongs will show through the gemstone.

Something that might work well would be something like this one.

Jan,

Thanks so much! That is exactly the type of setting that I want! I'll be sure to ask for a 6-prong basket style setting.

I really appreciate your help!

Thanks, Irish. I am excited. Best of all -- it's not totally breaking our budget. I was about an inch away from buying a red spinel that cost 3x as much as this stone, but I thought about it, and purple is my favorite color. Plus, I love that this stone is round. To me, this is worth every bit as much as one of the more coveted spinel colors...

It's a beautiful spinel Stacy! I love the purple colors too! Please post a few pics when it's set. I'd love to see it!

Congrats!

Thanks, Amy! I pick it up tomorrow afternoon and will probably head straight to the jewelers. If it can be placed in a stock setting, it should be finished sometime next week (depending on how long it takes to get the setting I order). I'm so excited!

Well, I picked up my spinel today and it is awesome. I LOVE it! I took it straight to the jeweler and ordered a Stuller Solstice setting with a bombe shank in 14k white gold for it (with 6 prongs). I used to have a sim set in that setting, and I LOVED it... Hopefully I'll love my spinel in it too. I'll post pics next week when I have the finished product!
