What about this sapphire?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-10-08 , 08:00 PM

Hey Y'all.

I was perusing AJS gems, and I ran across this seemingly beautiful sapphire. Here are the specs:

Number of Pieces: 1
Total Weight: 1.22 carats
Size: 6.80 x 5.40 x 4.20 mm
Origin: Madagascar
Clarity: Eye Clean
Treatment: Heated
Shape: Pear
Cut: Step Cut

And a picture ---

Now, why would a stone that's this pretty be so inexpensive? It's only $140. Is there something wrong with the stone that you can see?

It looks like a beauty to me......I can't see anything wrong with it. I have never bought anything from them though.

I was just looking at their rubies. Some of them are TDF!!

Well, it doesn't matter anymore. It's sold. Grr... That's one of the reasons I don't like to post a question about a stone that I'm interested in -- someone always snatches it up before I can get feedback.

Maybe the low price could be because it's a doublet (two different stones fused together). I've seen similar pictures and the stones were doublets. ???

Hmm.. Interesting thought, Irish. I've never heard of that before, but wouldn't the company, AJS, tell the consumer that? Wouldn't it be misrepresenting the product by not telling the consumer? I've only heard good things about them.

No nothing wrong with it. AJS are serious people.

But it is heated. Heated sapphires are getting cheaper by the day.

However, if it heated with beryllium it is too expensive.

How can you tell / know if a sapphire is heated with beryllium? And why are they getting cheaper?

Any labs can test for beryllium. Every sapphire must be 3rd party certified.

They are getting cheaper because the supply increases while demand shifts to untreated gems.

Beryllium heated blue (or any other color) go for $10/carat wholesale.

That may be, but with a lab report costing close to $100, who cares if a low priced stone is treated ? You aren't going to get a museum quality stone for a couple hundred dollars and so if it's nice, has a low price and you like it, I'd say just assume its been treated,(keep the lab report money in your pocket), buy it and enjoy it. On the other hand a lab report is becoming a "must have" in stones over $1000 per carat or so that are claimed to be untreated.
