Best Diamond Setting
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 12-03-07 , 05:30 PM

Hi,

I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I am looking for some advice on what kind of setting I should get for a solitaire engagement ring.

Specifically I am concerned about the security of the diamond in the setting. Many of the older women who have helped me in the jewellery shops I have gone to so far have advised me to pick a secure setting like a bezel setting. Their recommendation stems from their own worry about losing the diamond, but wanting to wear it as much as they can.

However I do not like the bezel setting, and I am quite sure my girlfriend would not like it either. I know my girlfriend's approximate preferences. I am looking for a round cut diamond, between 0.5 and 1.0 ct, in a very simple classic setting with a fairly thin ring. I also want to maximize the light entering the diamond. Unfortunately I cannot ask her opinion without spoiling the surprise.

So far I would like to choose the classic setting with four prongs based purely on looks. Is this setting insecure? Is a six prong setting better? Any other recommendations.

Thanks for any help you can give.

If you go with a 4 prong setting, get platinum prongs. Should be pretty secure as long as it is set correctly.

As far as maximum light return, that would have to do with how well the diamond is cut.

Hi,

Do not get talked into a bezel setting unless you are sure that is what your intended wants.

You should be fine with four prongs. The lower the setting and shorter the prongs, the more secure the diamond will be.

You have to be careful though, I have seen some rings that are set too low and with some designs it tends to take away from the femininity of the ring IMO.

Here is an example of one of our 4 prong designs that is set low but not too low.
