Sort of an education for those people who didn't know these cuts existed ...until now! Enjoy the thread...it's late and I have to get up for church in 6 hours! With 19 facets on the crown, 36 facets on the pavilion, the Firerose Cut has the total of 61 facets ( including the 6 girdle facets), as well as unconventional angle dimensions and large polished surfaces. The bottom culet faces up through the top facet, radiating special sparkle and shine. When looking through a loupe, it looks like the petals of a flower. The Firerose Cut was originally introduced as part of a group of "Flower Cuts" by De Beers in 1989. All the cuts in the group were the brainchild of master Antwerp cutter Gabi Tolkowsky, who thought his new cutting technique gave the stones "maximum brilliance." History From GIA's Extra Info , Volume I, Number 1, March 1989 Nicholas Oppenheimer, chairman of the Central Selling Organization (CSO), presented five new diamond cutting designs at the 24th World Diamond Congress in Singapore in August 1989. The cuts are registered as Fire-Rose, Sunflower, Zinnia, Marigold, and Dahlia. Planned for rough that is included, colored, irregular in shape, or small, the new cuts include rounds and fancy-shapes. According to the CSO, some of the cuts enhance brilliance, others improve the appearance of the stone's color or clarity, and all produce higher weight yield than most conventional cuts. They can be adapted to sizes ranging from melee to several carats. The new cuts have proportions that vary beyond the range usually seen in conventional cuts. For example, the table sizes of most round brilliants are between 55 and 65 percent; those of the new cuts range from about 47 to 62 percent. Another example is total depth percentage: The usual range for conventional cuts is around 55 to 65 percent, but the new cuts run from about 50 to more than 77 percent. After preliminary studies by the CSO, cutter Gabi Tolkowsky created the new designs. Tolkowsky has also been commissioned to cut the 599 carat Centenary diamond for De Beers. Starting in the business at the age of 15, he has been in the diamond industry over 30 years. Tolkowsky's family has been in the industry much longer. His great, great grandfather Abraham Tolkowsky founded a six-generation cutting dynasty. His relatives include Lazare Kaplan (of Lazare Kaplan, Inc.) who cut the 726-carat Jonker diamond in 1936; Marcel Tolkowsky, one of the first to apply modern optical theories to diamond cutting; and Sam Tolkowsky, first chairman of the Antwerp Diamond Bourse. His father Jean Tolkowsky was a pioneer diamond cutter and instructor in Israel.

Sunburst...
The Sunburst cut is a round stone with 81 facets on the crown and 64 facets on the pavilion, making the total of 145 facets. The high refractive index of the colorless rough enhances the fiery flashes of the spectrum of light reflection. It looks just like a sun is bursting inside the stone.

King's Cut
The King's cut is an old cut that has been neglected by the present day cutters. It has a large number of facets (with 49 facets on the crown and 36 facets on the pavilion, making the total of 85 facets) , thus returning good brilliance. It falls a few facets short of being classified as a multi-facet brilliant. Except for the shape of the star facets, it is much like the twelve-fold version of the standard round brilliant. It's one of the classics of the good old days!

The Sunflower...
With 25 facets on the crown, 20 facets on the pavilion, the Sunflower Cut has the total of 45 facets. It is a cut-cornered square shape with brilliant-cut pavilion.

And finally we have the Quadrillion...
Not part of the Flower group, but I thought it was cool. The quadrillion or the modified princess cut is a square with sharp corners form of the radiant cut. The combination of the brilliance like in the round and the square contour is very appealing. The cut produces an extraordinary fiery sparkling gemstone.

You can send them an email. They are really good at getting back to people within 48 hours. Also, for a 3 carat stone I think it's only about $34.00, but the shipping is $16 so it makes sense to order more than one stone. |
