Any one know what causes this type of color zoning

I have several peices of Ametrine showing this zoning. Ive also noticed it over the years when cutting Amethyst. With the Amethyst it is Purple,Clear,Purple,Clear ,Purple,Clear. I believe when Ive seen it in the Amethyst ist alligned with the hexagonal crystal faces. It kinda looks like the pattern in Brazil law twining. Seeing how the color zoning reaches all the way to the center of the stone it looks like the zoning was continual all the way though the crystal growth. Could it be caused by some outside force after the crystal grows, but only affects every other crystal face??????
