Calling all jewelry design experts.
OK here is my deal. I'm looking into purchasing a 2.40ct ceylon sapphire and i want to design something with it. My boss and coworker said it would look "gay" for a guy to wear such a big blue stone in a necklace pendant or even in a ring. I have always wanted to own a big ceylon sapphire, but dont know what i could wear it in without everyone looking at me and getting the wrong idea, if you know what i mean. So, let me hear it from the experts. This means you Brad, Jan, Brian Knox, Michael E, Platinum Smith and all the other experts. Have any of you ever seen or designed anything for a man with a big colored stone. Do y'all think i should just say the hell with what everyone else thinks and get what i like. This is the stone im looking at purchasing. |

Re: Calling all jewelry design experts.
Look gay ? Hmmm, I'm not quite sure how the size, shape or color of a gem can make it look gay or even feminine, (it's the setting that produces most of that sort of impression I think). That's one of those things thats in the mind of people who think that way and probably not in everone's, so I wouldn't worry about it. Get what you like and forget about what anyone else is thinking, since they aren't going to be wearing it, (and it's none of their business anyway). As far as design, I'd choose something that suits your tastes and needs. If you like larger, heavy bands then I'd go with that. If you're concerned about giving someone a "flowery" impression then you might want to avoid a flower motif and stay with something manly, say a big tiger on each side of the stone or something like that. |

Re: Calling all jewelry design experts.
I was thinking of making a chain with a pendant that holds the stone much like this setting in a solid white gold ball. This is a belly ring that this stone is set in but the ball for a 2.50ct stone would be a much bigger ball. How do you all think this would look. |

Re: Calling all jewelry design experts.
Well if your going to set that in a belly ring , good luck ! I did a large Emerald in a setting for a guy to hang on a chain one time. Not sure , but what about a nice men`s ring ? Sapphire is a good stone choice. |

Re: Calling all jewelry design experts.
Yeah we have been talking about putting it in a mans ring, but are unsure of what kind of setting. He also says that 2.40ct would be way to big for a mans ring, especially since i'm a little guy. But this stone is 100% perfect. Right color, cut and everything. Do y'all think i should just get it and see how big it looks on my finger and if i dont like it then send it back. What type of settings would you have in mind brad. Quote:
