Buying from Personal Seller - Tips?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 06-11-07 , 11:35 AM

Hello,

I'm considering buying a 1 CWT 3 stone princess cut diamond ring from a personal seller from Craigslist.com. Posted pricing is $695, says original price was $1500. I LM on his VM asking if he has the original reciept and any authenticity papers, but short of that, is there anything I can do at the time of purchase to verify the ring has real diamonds?

Will you be making the exchange in person?

Bring a mirror with you and see if the diamonds will scratch the surface. If they won't, they aren't real diamonds.

I wouldn't recommend doing what Sheperdlover suggested because even CZ will scratch glass. Where did this person purchase the ring?
Can he give you the diamonds' weights, measurements, color & clarity? I'd be suspicious of anything claimed as D-E color and having clarity. If it was from a chain store it might be a stock item and might be found online if they have a website. Try to match his information to the site stuff.

Also keep in mind 1 ct. of diamonds vs. 1ct. of cz mounted in the exact same setting will feel lighter in your hand because diamonds weigh less than cz.

My suggestion might be to meet at a jewelry store, and have the stone tested right there.

Definitely second Yogimel's suggestion. It is surely better safe than sorry.
