My future fiance is set on the ring as picture in the image file. However she wants it with a square shapes emerald, cause she likes the glassy looks of emeralds. She does not want a rectangular emerald cause she thinks it would look bad with this ring. Is there such a thing as a square shaped emerald cut diamonds? All the jewelers I talk to tell me I want a radiant cut when I ask for a square shape emerald.
I have seen something called a Asscher cut, but they seem to be very exspensive and out of my price range. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John Bryant

Yes, you can find a square shape Emerald cut diamond. If you are looking on line, call someone at the site you are looking at and ask them to find you one. If you are B&M shopping, you may have to keep looking until you find someone who knows what you are talking about. They are out there, just keep looking.

The one problem I see....If she wants this type of ring, it may have to be custom made to accomadate an Emerald. Shouldn't be that big of a deal though. Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. One more question, would this be considered a square emerald cut? I guess I'm not sure how to read measurements what oreder they are in: Height, width, length and all.

Carat: 1.02
Color: G
Clarity: VS1
Measurements: 5.98*5.02*3.53
Depth: 70.30

L/W = 1.19, so the stone is 20% longer than it is wide...not a square cut.

What percentage wise would be considered square? I have seen for princess cut there is even a 1%-15% difference. I have found one that is 6.64 x 6.06 x 3.39 emerald or roughly 10%.

Thanks,
John

Princess Cuts

are often cut square, so that the length and width are the same. Sometimes you can find a square, or nearly square, emerald cut, but not often.

Well, here's what a rectangular emerald looks like with this ring (Jeff Cooper Style No. 2990, vs. the 2964 you posted). Has she seen this one?

Yes she has seen the lot #2990. However, she likes the thickness of the #2964 however she wants a square emerald cause of the square shape of the #2964 as pictured in original post. Complicated? YES. This has shown me how complicated furniture will be in the near future.

Thanks,
John

Phew, good luck! I'm taking an easier and riskier route: I'm choosing the ring myself without my girlfriend's input. (Gulp!)

Well, I have asked some questions and paid a lot of attention to what she likes. This will be a big surprise, though.

I'm getting the 2964 in a high polish finish (not the two-tone with satin).

I guess she'll get to pick the furniture.

Question for the pros

Is it easier to find a glassy (poorly cut) radiant square, or a square emerald cut?

It is easier for me to find poorly cut Radiants.

Honestly, stick with a better cut Emerald. I love Radiants, but if you are after the "glassy" look, go with the Emerald cut.

Hey CCB, I tried to e-mail you, however I couldn't via diamondring.com. I was just wondering who you were going through for your ring. So if you see this you can e-mail me at jabryant76@hotmail.com

Thanks,
John

Not sure what your budget is but here are a couple a little more square:

1.04 F VVS2 64.3D 65.0T 6.19*5.49*3.53 for a L:W of 1.12 (it has slight flourescence though)

and

1.02 G VVS2 65.3D 68.0T 6.22*5.53*3.61 for a L:W of 1.12

and

1.11 D VS1 62.8D 61.0T 6.40*5.59*3.57 for a L:W of 1.14

and

1.08 F VS1 61.0D 69.0T 6.27*5.92*3.61 for a L:W of 1.06

and

1.0 E VS1 60.1D 62.0T 5.78*5.77*3.47 it doesnt get much more square than this one.

I am sure if you look long enough, that you should be able to find something pretty close. I think your best bet would be online though, as brick and mortar stores dont seem to have a good selection of emerald cuts.

Jeff Cooper setting - price

I remember a recent thread on that Jeff Cooper setting, it was around $1200. You can find it for less, if not by Jeff Cooper, by someone else. It seems everyone is reproducing it these days.

Square Cut Emerald
Quote this post and reply to it Post#18 @ 08-08-01 , 03:00 PM

Hi jabryant76-

I think that a square cut emerald is possible. When I was looking for my ring, one of the things I noticed in looking at the fancies princesses, radiants, and emeralds, is that that there is no standard length to width ratio. At one point I was going to get a rectangular emerald, and have it set in an atypical way. As in the length (long) end would be set along my finger. When I asked, I was told that in these cuts there are no standards. So if that's what she wants, I'll bet it's around.
