Scary Purchase???
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 12-08-06 , 06:29 PM

I am from LA and found what I hope is a good deal, what do you think?

.76 carat
D color
Ideal cut
Good sym/ Good polish

however it is a SI2 because of Inclusions on the top that are eye clean and somewhat easy to see with a 10x eyepiece. The scary part is it was laser drilled. The dealer was up front and said because it was drilled it has brought it down to an affordable price.

To the eye it looks great however I am worried that it was drilled. Does drilling cause long term problems for diamonds?

Not that I know much, but any diamond can be a good deal if the price is right. I can't comment at all unless I know the cost!

There are plenty of goods in that grade with GIA reports and no drills at a better buy.

Again, not that I know much of anything, I think you could find something that would fit your budget. Opinions on laser drilled stones vary on here, but I bet you could find something nice for your budget that aren't laser drilled. Do you need a D color? Did it have paperwork, and if so, what agency? To me, it doesn't look like such a spectacular deal that you couldn't pass it up.

Just my non proffesional opinion, but I think that price is way too high for a laser drilled diamond. I think you find a comparable (or better) stone with no drilling and probably with a reputable lab report for the same money. I'd pass on that one.

Well actually it has a GIA w/ a report stating that there was one drill hole.

What is a fair price on this diamond?

Also no one seems to have an answer if drilling really takes away from the diamond and if there are long term effects, any answers?

Like I said, opinions vary - some think it doesn't compromise the integrity of the diamond, and some do. I personally would err on the side of natural, and take a lower color grade or even a slightly lower carat weight over a laser drilled stone. That's just me.
