I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
I found this rock in the pasture today. Any ideas? One side is green/blue in color and rounded smooth like it used to be a ball before it broke. I've found a lot of arrowheads on my land so I'm wondering if this isn't something the indians carved way back when. ??? The other side looks like black crystals. When I put the rock on a light board it turns blue green where the light shines through. It's very light weight for the size. It's very light weight for the size. ![]() ![]() |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
It could be fluorite but by no means am I an expert! Briolette might be a good member to PM on this. Good luck! |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
I'll post a photo of the other side. The camera battery went kaput right after the light board photo. Could it be aquamarine? Aqua has been found in this county. ???? |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
It doesn't look like aqua to me and fluorite is light for its mass. Do you have any rock stores close by that would be only too happy to check it out for you? |

better photos. I held it over a flashlight and for some reason the color changed from blue to white in the picure. My hand is reflecting the red on the rhs. ??? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I don't have a clue for you, but it's very interesting and I'm dying to here what the gem experts say! |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
What a cool specimen. It's really hard to tell from pictures, but from what you are describing, I'd agree with Diamondjunkie that that rock might be predominantly flourite. There are probably other minerals growing on the surface of it that account for the rough surface. Maybe calcite or celestite as well? My first thought when I saw the pics is that it is a crystal aggregate of a bunch of minerals and not just one type. A rock shop or local earth science museum should be able to tell you. I'm curious! |

Fluorite will glow like crazy under long wave ultra violet light. (black light) Doug |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
Could it be a meteorite? I'm on a business trip so can't take it anywhere right now. Look at the second picture on this site. This is what the surface of the rough side looks like. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tektite There are also what looks to be airbubbles under the surface on the smooth side. |

Guessing Game
From the first pictures, my guess would be moldavite. I think that travelngal's guess was pretty much on the money. Moldavite is a meteorite. |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
Oooh, that's a big meteorite! I do own moldavite (In fact, I'm faceting one right now) and it's a bright apple green, but the airbubbles is a sure giveaway that you have some sort of natural glass. what a cool find! |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
I have a feeling that this isn't a glassy object like Moldavite, since the "black crystals mentioned don't really fit with that sort of material. Also the whitish granular fracture looks like what briolette had described as a crystal aggregate, which would point towards something like quartzite or even a fractured piece of agate. can you scratch it with a pocket knife ? If you chip the edge with a hammer what does the fracture look like ? |

Re: I found this rock..... blue green on lightboard????
I'm still on business, but I did break some off when I first found it. It's glass like. Very shiny, sharp breaks. There are cracks on this that remind me of "glass blowers art" gone bad. I'll try and get better photos when I get back. |

Work!!!!!!!!!
That's a four letter word but I guess people have to do it. I've found turquoise, I've found gold, I even found a petrified human tooth but I've never found anything that fell from the sky, lucky you! |
