Comparison shopping on eBay?
(first post) I'm on the hunt for a new sparkly - and I've been checking eBay now & then. Can anyone share their thoughts on this eBay item ? I realize there are a few red flags (no cert, return policy??) but is it a fair price indicator? Does it seem like a nice stone? |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Makes me nervous that you cannot have the appraisal. It looks a little more tinted than an H to me, but that could be the lighting. Also, looking on toolhaus.org it shows that a fraud case was filed and won against this seller. If you do buy it, definitely only use Paypal and not wire transfer!! |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Hmmmmmmm... Did you notice that this same person has purchased more than five other diamonds on ebay recently themselves? AUG 06 - 1.01ct Round eBay 260017231039 AUG 06 - 1.01ct Round eBay280002436894 AUG 06 - 1.71ct Princess eBay 250022886411 SEP 06 - 1ct Round eBay 290026366789 SEP 06 - 2ct Round eBay 230000900119 This item was removed by the seller, but still.. they were one of the purchasers. ..and there are more diamond items they have bought in just the last couple months! Aside from what the other DT posters have mentioned already, I can't help but wonder if this person is running some sort of scam on this diamond? Just seems odd and raises some serious red flags to me! |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Welcome to DT! From a quick look, here is my perception: The thing that stands out to me about this ad is the way he describes the appraisal situation. First off, an appraisal from a GIA graduate gemologist on a 2.27ct stone just isn't going to cut it for me. In my mind, stones like this should have an actual GIA report - no question. Secondly, you don't even get the (albeit, pretty much worthless) appraisal he says he has. The way he says "my ex has the paperwork and will not hand it over," makes it sound like this was a ring from a relationship gone bad - this, in a consumer's mind, might seem like justification for the low asking price because he just wanted to get rid of it. However, if you look at his buyer comments, it appears like he has sold many a diamond solitaire in the past. He does this to make money, not just to recover some of the cost of an engagement ring. Maybe his ex only keeps the appraisals for the really big diamonds... It just doesn't make sense to me. Good luck on your diamond hunt! |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
MHO, at the very least I would want a GIA report before shelling out 10k. I get no peace of mind that a "GIA grad gemoligists" gave his opinion on the grading of a mounted stone. FWIW, there are some shots of that stone that make it look yellower than a true GIA "H", which I have... It may very well be that her ex isn't handing over the paperwork, but to compensate for that, if it were ME asking someone to shell out 10k, I'd be bending over backwards to document, document, document. I'm leery on this one. |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Thanks, everyone - i know this is a sketchy seller! i have a diamond broker in NYC who just isn't getting back to me! i'm being impatient and obsessive. this ring just looked so nice and large - and priced around my spending range. i now realize it's simply not an accurate representation of the product = too good to be true. oh well ~ thanks for the reality check. |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Run! I agree with everyone here - $10k is A LOT of money and should get you a sizeable ring. A lesson I have learned is NOT to focus solely on the carat weight alone. A stone with a great cut (even smaller than 2 cts) will look big and sparkly on your finger yet a honker with a terrible cut will just sit lifeless and dull on your finger. Heck, I have seen stones in the 1/2 carat to 3/4 look trump those which weighed over a carat. In the case of diamonds, I am a firm believer of quality over size. Like Webgal said, find a jeweler who can get you a great diamond to fit your budget, and then trade up in a few years (or months ).

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Welcome rockme! You have come to the right place to ask questions! The consumers as well as the network jewelers are very helpful when it comes to questions such as yours. I hope you find what you are looking for. I just wouldn't with that guy something just seems off! |

Re: Comparison shopping on eBay?
Take a look at the seller's feedback, you will see she bought that 2 carat size 5 mount from American Set on E-bay...from the pics, the diamond doesn't even look genuine, just as the "custom mount" she claims to have had made a month ago, is NOT! Beware! |

Meeting with broker Friday!
Thanks everyone for steering me away from that hoax ob eBay! I finally have an appointment to meet with our diamond broker (a new referral whom I've not met before) this Friday. I'm upgrading my engagement ring & scrapping the old set. I just need to set some parameters for myself before hand. I know I want a 1.75-2.25 carat round brilliant & he has several stones to show me. I just worry that I'll want the largest, most expensive stone (or just the largest) & I need to be somewhat reasonable yet still end up with a beautiful ring. Advice? ie: what color/clarity range I should stay in? I know I'm going to be overwhelmed. THANKS! |
