Shell Pink Tourmaline

$275

Item sold

This tourmaline is a fine, medium pure pink and measures 9mm in diameter weighing 2.70 carats. It has a special cut with 12 pavilion mains making it look very bright with very small, very numerous flashes of brighter pink. Check out that shot in very bright light with a dark background. Hard to catch, but you can definitely see 12 bright arrows.

Very pretty!

Michael.. do you ever cut gems into OEC's or OMC's?? Or do thier different light properties make that a bad thing to do?

But of course Diamlady. Any type of cut you can imagine, (and that would work well), can be designed and cut. Some stones really work out better with these high crowned types of cuts in that they will show better fire than they would otherwise. This is because most common colored stones have low dispersion compared to diamond and high crowns can maximize what little dispersion that they do have. Did you have something in mind ?

What a lovely shade of pale pink!!!!!

ooooh Michael if you ever have any OMC's to take pictures of I'd be highly interested!!!!!! I love the way you cut your stones.

Could you tell me the difference between a Regent, OMC, and Antique Cartier? These are the old cuts I'm interested in finding more information on. Also, I love your Cashmere color - I have H colored melee in my e-ring - would the Cashmere be too different of a color for it to look good?

Hmm, not really Michael, but just wondered because I have yet to see natural gems cut to OEC or OMC.

You cut that beautiful OEC for me in your cashmere rough a few years back and it was soooooooo pretty!!! So I was thinking something like that or an OMC in a natural gem! Don't know which gem... but I'd love to see some examples since I don't know which gems would look really good in that cut.

Hey Michael, do you have any ideas for setting this as a pendant?

Hi Mira,
Heck yes, I'm full of lots of ideas ! This does not mean that I'm "full of it" as some people may suggest. You know one thing that I've always thought would be neat was a non-symmetrical floral scroll wrapping around one side of a stone with the stone contained with one of it's spiral arms. Have to be careful here in that you don't want something too large. Something akin to a hanging basket of foliage sprouting from the top of the stone and draping over one side and falling off of the bottom. Of course a few well placed diamonds to spice it up a bit wouldn't hurt !

It's hard for me to picture that. I think that an asymetrical half halo that tapers like a half moon would be cool too. I want to make a pink stone pendand for my SIL but I don't want to break the bank. She likes girly stuff - this is a very girly pink doncha think?

Mira,
This tourmaline is almost lacy. Since most guys don't wear lace I suppose that I'd characterize this as "girly". As far as breaking the bank goes, well I'm really sorry, but that's my job !

All grand humor on my part aside, I have put together a Q&D, (quick and dirty), hack job sketch showing a couple of options. The first one is not really a half moon, but could be easily. The diamonds in the halo could be tapered in two directions as could the metal work, the moon expanded in the middle, another stone dangled at the bottom or the entire thing turned into a big question mark symbol. Print it out, take a pencil and mark it up to your hearts content. I can make anything you can draw so have at it !

The second drawing is a really poor excuse for a floral scroll, but it only took 10 seconds, so ya get what ya pay for, (in time in this case). It does get the idea across though. I've taken the liberty of putting a second smaller stone below the first. I was thinking a bright blue tourmaline to complement the pink. I just happen to have a couple of small pieces of bright blue tourmaline from Afghanistan which are a touch deeper in color than "Paraiba" tourmaline that would look really cool in this sort of design. You could, of course see many places in this design to place some small diamonds. Remember too, that the stones have depth, so this design would be as deep as the stone from the side giving a great three dimensional look !

Give me that hammer, that little piggy, (bank), has got to go !
