What would you do with this ?
This is a typical question that I ask myself often when I have a rough stone that's shaped a bit strangely, but is too high value to just shrug it off. This piece of tanzanite is shaped kind of like a tooth with a slight veil in the bottom section which can be mostly removed during cutting. It's a fine blue in one direction and an almost fluorescent violet in the other direction. The big question centers around how to cut this. My initial thought is to cut it almost to it's present outline and set it in something like a sailboat with the stone being a sail. This would give me the best weight retention and be the most creative use of the piece, but be harder to sell than cutting it as a more common pear or triangle shape. This piece weighs 5.45 carats and as a sail would probably cut down to a 2.4 carat finished stone. As a more common cut it would be lucky hit 1.75 carats. What would you do and why ? This is a public poll so everyone can see what you think...be nice ! |

Re: What would you do with this ?
While it would be nice to keep the weight retention by making it into a "sail" shape, I say go with your gut as it will be harder to sell. I think a traditional pear shaped will be stunning....although, you could go a tiny bit different and do an "arrowhead" shape too! Wait.......would it be hard to do a " a step cut lozenge" type shape? All these shapes started dancing in my head....but Michael, even if I did not help with this poll, I know whatever you do with it will be remarkable!!!! ![]() |

Re: What would you do with this ?
My gut tells me to go for a more standard shape like a triangle or pear because it would appeal to more people. Even though retaining more carat weight and the more creative shape is good, would it do you any good to have it sitting around a long time until that sailing enthusiast comes along? Besides, given your talents, I'm sure you can come up with a stunningly creative design for the standard shape ![]() |

Re: What would you do with this ?
I voted: Cut it to a standard shape... it may be easier to sell I have to agree with Tea and Luvn ![]() |

Re: What would you do with this ?
Yeah, I agreed with the gals...I think a 'traditional' shape would be easier to sell. I'd not wear a 'sail' custom piece personally. That said, there are LOTS of boat mad people out there...it might be something that would sit in stock for a while, but i'm sure a buyer would come along. GREAT colour by the way. |

Shark tooth!!!!!!!! |

Re: What would you do with this ?
I would cut it to a sail shape, but skip the boat. Mount it in a three prong white metal with small diamonds at each prong, and set in a pendant/clasp for pearls.... Or, cab cut it and do something simliar to a Tiffany's...I think its called Sugarloaf? Or, if you want to do the boat, plenty of ways to market it. |

Re: What would you do with this ?
Wow! What incredible color. I'd go for an elongated trilliant if the stone would support it. More flashes than a step cut and close enough to traditional to broaden its appeal. |

Re: What would you do with this ?
Weeeeelllll, I think that if you are going to just sell the stone then you should cut it into a common shape. However, given the fact that you are so talented, I think you should cut it into a fabulous fancy shape and mount it into a fabulous custom mounting, and sold as a complete package. I wouldn't cut it into a fancy shape to be sold without a mounting. Just my 2cents! |

Re: What would you do with this ?
AND, I envision this as a modified trilliant maybe with a curve, and set into a mounting east west! |

Re: What would you do with this ?
I think a traditional cut would sell faster, but I love your creativeness and I'd like to see something more unique like your sail idea or the pendent idea mentioned by someone else. I say keep the carat weight and do something unique, you might have to sit on it awhile longer, but I have faith that someone will snatch it up!!!!!! |

Did this ever get cut? I'd like to see it. |

Not yet, this last Christmas season was busier than normal and I wasn't able to get to this stone. Probably this next week though. I'll post some finished pictures as soon as it's done ! |

Re: What would you do with this ?
Hi Jasmin, Yep, It's in my store area here: http://www.diamondring.com/forums/s...63#po st515604 I had to cut it as a pear since it had too many inclusions in one corner that were distracting. Ah well, it did turn out well as a pear ! |

Oh I love it!! Get creative! Go with it, and when you go to sell it or market it depending on your location go with the sail thing, water.... a pendant would be real nice. Or a mans ring! Gorgeous color stone, love it!! Want to see the final, that would be fun! Good luck! :o) |
