how do you tell glasss from real gems?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 09-26-06 , 05:34 PM

I have a stupid question. I bought a antique trunk from the 1800's to redo in a pocket in it I found a old red? I am not sure what it is! It could be glass but I don't see any bubbles. I have researched it but terms are to complicated for me to understand. I don't want to throw it out if it is a real gem. I tried to take some photo's of the play of light outside today. Even inside it always seems to have a little red glow. I don't know how to post them here so I put them on my homepage under photo's the last 3 photos of are red? They look better small they take along time to download to enlarge. The back looks like it has a few natural I think not scratch's maybe flaws. It is rather rounded not really cut at least there are no sharp edges. except maybe aroung the very rim on the top they are quite worn smooth too. I have had this for several months setting on my dresser and found it today again dusting and remebered this web site and how nice everyone is! Thought I 'd ask! Any help would be great thank-you

I think there is a diamond tester thing you can buy.....Kassoy or something...gosh, what was that...it was mentioned here on DR just the other day. But i don't know about a glass tester....

Can you take it somewhere locally for an opinion?

i probably can but I was worried I 'd look like a fool if its glass. i was hoping I could at least get an idea before I go. I have to pick a ring up thursday I 'll ask my jewler But he don't like guessing. He sent me to a gem shop 35 miles away for my other ring last week.
Thank you

If you see a bubble(s) it very likely that its glass abraded facet edges are an indicator as well....

I see no bubbles but there are a few scratches pretty deep would a gem scratch like this. What are abraded faucets? it isn't really cut more rounded or worn not sure. corners aern't even one higher than another. it is uneven because if you set in down it is crooked. not perfect i guess i want to say. thank you for your help/

posylady you have an interesting puzzle on your hands. What does the underside of the stone look like--is it flat on the bottom? How large is it?

Here are two of the three pics. I am thinking a cushion shape cabochon garnet.

it is 4 sides but rounded and then it tapers down. Sort of reminds me of a gem that has been cut then tumbled. top isn't flat either it is square but convex top corners are rounded. strange probably glass but it is pretty. Just found it in a pouch that was in a old trunk i bought at a estate sale it is about 5mm deep 15mm long and 12 mm wide. I would think if it was glass it would be perfect in shape. but its not. It has light that reflects on 4 sides it is double just from a dim lamp. Looks like a there are tiny lights in it. Just pretty neat. There are some pictures of it on my home page I posted above under photo's last three are photo's.

the lines that look like bubbles are scratches.

Glass being singly refractive will show the back facet junctions as single lines, but Corundum being doubly refractive will show twinning of the back facets when viewed through the crown/table. However there are gems such as Garnet that are singly refractive. But this could be a substantial clue.
