Tough decision to make
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 09-12-06 , 05:14 AM

Hi all,

Planning to propose in the next few weeks, and I am agonizing over the following Lazare diamonds:

1) 1.20 ct D VS2

2) 1.35 ct E VS1

Both are Lazare diamonds and in addition to them being from Lazare, 1) is certified by GIA, 2) is certified by AGS. Both are none fluorescent.

The difference in price is about US$1,800.

Barring the differing carat sizes of the diamonds, what is the trade-off involving D VS2 and E VS1? Is color more important than clarity? Given that both are pretty much similar (ie:- D is not much visible (to the naked eye) than E; and VS1 is only marginally clearer than VS2).

Which one should I get? Would appreciate your advice and opinions. Thanks!

HMV---
Welcome to DT!
I am no expert, but from the specs you stated in your post, it sounds like the two diamonds are very comparable (on paper at least). I would suspect that the differences between the two diamonds are probably undetectable to the naked eye.
In my opinion, cut is king. It's the most important aspect of the diamond. You can have a diamond that looks great on paper, but if the cut is poor, the sparkle will be diminished.
Again, this is just my opinion.
Therefore, if I were in your shoes, I would make sure that both diamonds were loose (not in a setting) and study them both.
Which one pleases your eye more? Shines more? Has more fire and sparkle?
Pick the one that outperforms the other.
If they are identical to the naked eye, then I'd gone with the least expensive, but you might want to get the opinions of some experts on here too.
Good luck and have fun getting engaged!

Welcome to the forum.

This is probably not what you want to hear, but it is the truth.

The only way to know which diamond is more beautiful is to compare them side by side.

To make a choice based soley on the info you listed, you might as well use the Eanie, Meanie, Miney, Moe method.

I am guessing that you looked at them, go compare them again in different lighting environments and trust your eyes, in the end, beauty is subjective and it is your opinion that matters.

Hi, HMV...welcome.

I suspect that you won't go wrong with either of those choices...and that it is VERY unlikely that you can discern the difference between D and E color, or VS-1or2 clarity.

Actually, to me, after cut, SIZE is the most important factor! I'd probably look for something really well cut but a few notches down in color and clarity so I could get a bigger diamond...

Assuming that both stones are well cut, I would say get the BIG one ! Here's my reasoning:

1. $1800...Phew! No big deal, in six months you'll have forgotten all about the cost.
2. Neither you, nor I, nor anyone else that I know can tell the difference between the colors and clarity's in this range under any but the most analytical situations.
3. Assuming that the cuts on these are fairly close and are well done I don't think that you would notice a difference in the appearance of these two stones other than their size. Quality in cutting does matter, but there is a fairly broad range of angles, table sizes and depth percentages within that quality cut range, so if you're anywhere within that range, or even a bit outside of it, you've got a winner.
4. Size matters. Whether it's bragging rights or more intense looks, size matters. With a bigger stone, every facet is bigger, the brightness is stronger and the fire is more intense.

Brian's advice to look at them is very good and if you can see them both, side by side, well that just about beats anything else you can do. Just to make sure that this advice is good advice, I checked with my latest diamond analytical tool. Please check out the pictures and I think that you'll agree that this beats the "Eanie, Meanie, Miney, Moe" method.

Thanks for the replies, you have been lots of help.

About cut, since they are both Lazare diamonds, and you know how stringent Lazare are in their quality, wouldn't they be of similar cuts, ie:- "the patented Lazare ideal cut"?
