HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
hi all: i am new to this forum. I am need of some advice. I purchased a mounting from a jewelry outlet store. It was a final sale. I love it so much that I thought it wouldn't matter. They told me repeatedly, that it will fit a princess cut diamond. Well, I took it to an appraiser along with the princess cut diamond that I purchased for an appraisal. He told me that the ring is meant to be set for a round diamond. So the next day I took the mounting to the original jewelry store to tell them What I learned. They told me that the style of ring i purchased is meant to have a setting placed in the basket of the ring. I didn't know this, and I don't know if it will look good...that would mean it would seem that there are 8 prongs instead of 4. Anyway, he said that he will put a princess setting 4 prong inside the basket. below is a picture of mounting with the basket. Can someone please tell me if this is normal, or am I getting jacked around??? Can someone with much a better vision of this type of thing be able to help me visualize how it would look and if it would look nice. Thank you to all...I really do appreciate it |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
for for posting again....like I said I am new to this thing!!! anyway, I thought i should explain the big picture. that is an example of a 0.58 carat princess cut diamond that the jeweler placed in the basket with out the princess cut setting (this was before I new that there was supposed to be another prong setting in the ring) so I can take a picture before purchasing it. the picture on the left is the pictue of the basket of the ring. I plan on putting a 0.71 ct princess cut diamond. |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
Let me get this right: they are going to put a princess head INSIDE the original basket? Rubbish!!! That's not typical and it will look BAD. They are trying to pull a fast one. Perhaps one of the experts can chime in here and tell you if the round basket can be removed and replaced with a sqaure setting - that is the only way it will look right. It is a very pretty setting. Good luck! |

DiamondJunkie is right. My mother has had plenty of prongs replaced without putting then in the exsitsting basket. The network jewelers could help, but I don't think I would go back to the jeweler you took your setting to previously |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
That basket is for a round stone. Princess baskets customarily have V-tipped Chevron prongs to protect the points from chipping and fracture. The basket can be changed. Ask the store if they will do it for you. Just a note to Diamondtalk consumers: Buy the diamond first and then choose the setting. This way the Jeweler can manufacture the setting to conform to the exact specs of the stone. |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
thanks for replying so quickly. in reply to diamondjunkies question, yes he told me they are planning to put a princess setting in the basket. I told him I wanted just one set of prongs and asked if the original basket can be replaced. His reply was a defiant NO, citing it will ruin the design of the mounting. Just so I can get this straight in my head, the basket is designed for a round diamond. If I want to put a princess cut diamond, I have to replace the basket with a V chevron prong princess setting. What happens if the original basket is molded with the entire ring and isn't saudered in? Can it still be done ( I don't know if it is or not) and how much would it cost normally to replace the setting. Also I am in the Fort Lauderdale area, can someone recommend a trustworthy jeweler to do this type of work. thank you very much |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
Labor for replacement may cost almost as much as the original ring. Will this jeweler do an exchange for you? |
|
|
Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
no he won't...unfortunately there are no refunds or exchanges at this place (the first red flag!!!), but I liked the mounting so much I thought it wouldn't matter. I paid $600 for the mounting, which means the labor costs could be up to $600? wow...what to do????? |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
Put a CZ or colored stone into the setting. |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
I agree that setting a head inside the basket doesn’t seem like a good tactic. It may be fairly easy to remove the basket and replace it with a different one, or it may be quite difficult. A good jeweler will be able to both give you a clear statement about what they can do and give you a firm estimate about the price. Is it the same jeweler who sold it the one who is suggesting the 8-prong solution? You might consider talking with a different jeweler about how to accomplish what you want. Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
jstwntagdring, First off, I do like the mounting itself. I think it's gorgeous! But I have to say.. I have NEVER, EVER heard of someone putting a prong setting INSIDE an existing basket/prong head. E V E R !!! He's giving you a load of crap. And despite his no-refund policy, I would demand your money back! The ONLY reason you bought it is because they told you it would fit a princess stone AS it is now. And it won't, so it should be refunded immediately! He's giving you a load of bull and he knows it! DO NOT let him! |

I agree with DiamLady - he sold it to you under false pretences. As such, you should be entitled to a refund. |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
thank you all for giving me very valuable information. I feel alot better now about my choices. I definetly won't be going back to that jeweler and I think I will try and switch the basket for a princess cut setting. Thanks to Barry for making it happen. best regards to all |

Re: HELP: i purchased a mounting...and it doesn't fit a princess setting
OK, this is my field big time, and here's the straight facts... A princesscut can easily be set into a "round prong" setting, and that is a solid fact. The "V-cap" style crown is of course idea, but the way you set a princesscut into a four prong round setting is simple, one cuts a seat after opening up the prongs, and then cuts a groove down the prong for directional stability... In essence you "make" the v-cap style from the round prong... I use a micro-ball burr to place a small hole where the horizontal seat (which holds the girdle) and the groove cut down the length of the prong (for the corners and point)... A slight pre-bend before the stone goes in and "POOF"... Don't let the local counter-jockey tell you something which is based upon selling something from his case, or an expensive crown swap job, without understanding that this is common place, possible and quite effective as well... Common sense says that when people do not know what to say they tend to make something up, and so goes the world... Cheers! |
