Color and clarity of an emerald cut?
I know the standard answer as far as the c's go, but how readily apparent is the color difference in an emerald cut diamond between say an f and an h or i? Same q for clarity to the naked eye for say vvs1 to vs2? The preceding form was filled out on our Ask Forum page. |

Re: color and clarity of an emerald cut
More noticeable than in a round. Coloration and eye-visible discerment of inclusion(s) is much easier to detect in Emerald Cuts due to their unique facet layout and alignment. Conventional wisdom says to stay at G or better in color and VS-2 or better in clarity. If you intend to buy on-line it's important to work with a Vendor that can bring the diamonds in for personal inspection/evaluation and provide you with clear and resolute photos. |

Re: color and clarity of an emerald cut
Hey David; Ditto to you my friend. You are correct. I should have been more clear in my posting. As in any other diamond shape, Cut quality is paramount. A well cut Emerald will face up whiter and cleaner and therefore one can seriously entertain a lower color/clarity combination. It just may be a bit more difficult because of the specific facet alignment of this shape. I did use the word "Conventional". Oftentimes the 'conventional wisdom' does not cover all the bases. Improving the Cut Quality of a diamond to the point where the "numbers" may not adhere to the 'conventional wisdom' may nevertheless result in an eye-popping diamond. That is why it is important to work with a vendor like David who knows his diamonds and can correctly advocate a beautiful eye-pleasing diamond that you might otherwise pass by because the 'numbers' don't fit the 'conventional wisdom'. |

Re: color and clarity of an emerald cut
Here is a thread which show what is, in my opinion, a gorgeous K colored emerald cut: http://www.diamondring.com/forums/s...ighlight=Alyson (David seems to really know where to find these babies!) I think that with the warmer colors you really have to take it on a stone by stone basis. Find someone you trust, then maybe you can save a little money by going a little further down the scale. |

Re: Color and clarity of an emerald cut?
My thinking about EC's have been changed radically since i've been on DT. Barry is right about the 'conventional wisdom' in that i've often heard it stated that you should stay above G/VS2 for an EC - indeed that is what I thought about colour and clarity before I joined DT - but David's EC's have totally changed my mind about the 'rules' and 'conventional wisdom' of emerald cuts. The trick is to get someone who knows what they are doing and that you trust to pick a diamond. I'd be hesitant to by a K from a dropshipper as you never know what you are going to get...and i'd bet they would look nothing like a K that David has hand picked.

Re: Color and clarity of an emerald cut?
I totally agree with what everyone has said above. I have a square em. cut, and its an "I VS2" but after seeing many of the stones that David has posted pictures of, you don't know how many times I'd known about him before I bought. I could have gotten a J or even a K color that looked just as white, depending on the cut, and could have afforded to go bigger!! |
