Tag Heuer Battery Replacement Question
I did a few searches before posting and was unable to find an answer, so here goes: Is there a special way that the battery needs to be replaced in a Tag Heuer watch due to it being pressurized? My Alter Ego model needs a new battery, but I have been hesitant to have it replaced because I've heard so many different things about where to send it/have it done. When I went back to BB&B where my watch was purchased, they told me that they could replace the battery, but it would not be pressure sealed. They said in order to have it pressurized, it would need to be sent directly to Tag. Any advice would be helpful - thanks! |

Re: Tag Heuer Battery Replacement Question
Not sure, but that is some interesting news. My husband has 2 Tag's and so far they're on the original battery. I'll be curious to see what you find out on DT. Bump |

Re: Tag Heuer Battery Replacement Question
There are many jewelers who have the pressure testing equipment and are certainly able to replace a battery. Problem is this: If the gasket will not hold, and the pressure test fails, they probably won't have the proper gasket unless they are a TAG dealer and have parts on hand, which is not likely. In this case, I daresay that if you want it pressure tested and sealed properly it would need to go to TAG. BTW the watch is not "pressurized" but the proper gasket sealing makes the watch able to withstand pressure, which accounts for the water resistance. I'd seek a path that gets the job done correctly, otherwise it will not be sealed from water or even dust. |

Re: Tag Heuer Battery Replacement Question
Thank you so much. I guess I used the terms incorrectly (blame it on my memory and not being able to recall exactly what the jeweler had said.)

Re: Tag Heuer Battery Replacement Question
Since TAG is a marketing company, not a watch company, this makes parts a bit more tricky. A Rolex, or Breitling dealer, for example, is likely to have spare parts to support routine battery changes (yes there are a few battery powered "Oyster Quartz" Rolexes), but with TAG parts are not likely to be at dealers. Let us know how this works out... |

I have been replacing batteries in my Tag and Seiko dive watches since the 80's,.. go to your local SCUBA shop and get some silicone grease for the seal.(Silicone grease is commonly used in UW camera o-rings) goto harbor freight and get a Watch back removal tool for $5.. change the battery yourself. Clean up all the grit and dirt on the watch back then coat the seal with some silicone grease (just enough to be slippery) re-assemble. The grease mainly helps the seal from twisting and tearing. I cannot imigine why the watch would need to be resealed in in a pressurized environment. It is no different than a UW camera. If you have any doubts, some Dive shops can pressure test the watch in a bowl of water for you. |

A chain is only as strong as the weakest link. DIYers end up paying dearly for their mistakes. Like the fact that there are also gaskets between the crystal and crown.., which also deteriorate over time under normal circumstances. Here's something to consider..., When you take the watch to the dive shop & they pressure test it in a bowl of water (as Nakkinhead suggests) and either the crystal or crown gasket fails allowing the watch to fill with water subsequently damaging the quartz circuit, dial and luminous hands.., how will you react? Nakkinhead.., any suggestions?! Wouldn't you rather be sure your TAG Heuer is sealed properly? Anyone remember that Midas commercial - You can pay a little now OR pay A LOT LATER! Here's a fun fact, a TAG Heuer sport professional 200m watch with water damage will cost $289 to replace the circuit..., the dial and luminous hands are not cheap to replace by any stretch! |

DIY and save....
Yep, you can DIY and even do a waterproofing test. Change the battery, grease the gasket, reinstall the back (with that suberb $5 tool) and drop the watch in a bowl of water. If it doesn't fill up with water you're good! If it does fill up, you can take it apart, buy a set of jewelers' screwdrivers and take the movement apart. If you can't get it back together again, throw it out. |

There is always some risk anytime you DIY on anything. If you change the oil in your car and don't tighten the drain plug or over fill it with oil you can damage your engine. I'm not saying there is no risk. If you don't feel comfortable changing the battery in your watch, please take it to a professional. No need to get snippy. |
