I've had lots of questions about Karma Points recently, so I figured I'd post about it here so everyone can benefit (and hopefully I'll get less questions  ). The karma is not something Admin has been touching. The points you earn are from fellow members only. And actually it's a feature that comes with vbulletin. We did not customize it. In fact I barely paid attention to it and never delved into how it works much. But basically, you can vote on a person's post. For positive votes, you get more karma. Negative votes reduce your karma. The more Karma you have, the more karma you can bestow. The Karma Power relates to how many karma points you can give others... Hope this answers all lingering questions... |

So I have double the karma points, she has double the posts but she is the one with double the karma power. I just assumed I had to post more (be more active in the DT community  ) to get more karma power...

OK, I just looked it up to be sure and it turns out to be a lot more complicated than that and you are right that posts are related.... Here are the factors, in no particular order, that go into Karma Power: Date Joined Post Count Amount of Karma you have Minimum post count before you have any karma power Minimum Karma points you need before you have any karma power Then there are limits to how much karma you can give in a day. AND you need to spread around a certain amount of karma before you can hit the same user again. In other words, there's only so much damage one person can do to you. So if you have a bad score, it likely came from multiple sources.. |

All of that makes perfect sense. Well... I know the minimum is more than 300 posts!

Ahhhhhh, all very interesting. I never knew what it was for, or how to get it, or how to use it! Looks like I have 5 karma votes I can give to someone. Hmmmmm.

Believe it or not, a talented developer who has a site about weed wrote it Can't remember the name of the site now. Shrooms.com. No.... It'll come back to me...  He has a HUGE site LOL. Seems lots of people like to talk about weed and compare notes. |

I'm on another message board where the karma is known as "frubals"....that board has turned it into a game and has increased comraderie and friendships amongst the board as people are hitting the 100K frubal mark!! It's silly, but it works for that board. |

I noticed the karma points, but I didn't use them here as it didn't seem to be part of the "community culture" and (as people are writing) aren't paid attention to anyway. But if people will use it, then it can be a lot of fun! |

We've got a major upgrade coming up in several weeks with new features. We'll be emphasizing some things and de-emphasizing others. While finishing all this up, I'd love to get feedback on what you like and want to see more of and what you don't like and what you'd like to see less of. TBF, If you can share your ideas on making karma fun, I'll be happy to try it. Where does that site show the karma? In the actual threads or in the control panel like we do? Do they use "usernotes" as well? No one seems to be using them here or aware they are there. And I never really focused on testing it much, so perhaps you don't even see the "Add usernote" when you look at the profile. When configuring the options, we set it up so that users can post notes to admin about other users. But I'm open to setting it up differently, maybe to even work in concert with Karma? From my side, I would love to see karma be useful to the end consumer. To be a way where our members can help others... |

Speaking only for myself Gilbert... I really would like to be able to send a private message to members here - not just vendors. It's just so quick and easy on other sites that use it. But I understand if you have some reason behind why it is disabled. I never knew what Karma points even were or how to use them until last week. And I have no idea what "usernotes" are. |

Gil you asked for suggestions... We've had many changes and tweaks on the forum, and the written information about them, in some cases, is a couple of tweaks behind, so I'd like to suggest a change to the Greet New Members Forum. It ought to be changed to something like Greeting New Members--so that it becomes the Welcome Mat or Entrance for newbies or a refresher for anyone wanting to know how something works--especially if things are going to be different with the next generation forums. In no particular order, it should have the "what and where" of navigating DiamondRing; * What is Karma and all it's power * How to do attachments- a step-by-step * How to post an ad in the Jewelry Classified * How to find the Diamond and Jewelry Databases * What, where, and how to access our PM system. * Explanation/instructions on the changes from the upgrade if appropriate. so that's the gist of my suggestion--A central place with the updated info to go with any forum tweaks or upgrades.... ttfn, Irish PS to anyone who has additional ideas on this, please add them.. |
