HELP, natural pink diamond
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 03-03-06 , 08:19 AM

I want to design my own engagement ring, and I want something very original and fine. Therefore I though of a natural pink diamond for my ring, but we have been enquiring regards prices and the quotes I got are extremely over our budget. I am looking for a natural pink diamond, not sure about the cut yet, but less than 0.5ct.

I have found this website:
http://www.fancy-diam.com/723c.html?id=5nwnuoMx

which seems to have affordable one, but comparing these to prices of $55,000, make me feel very suspicious. Although some of the diamonds of this site do include a certificate, I just can't understant how can they be at that cost. Is there something missing?

Has anyone delt with this supplier before?

Thanks everyone,

Farah

Hi OriginalColours

I don't know anything about that site.

And I'm more than suspicious at the foreign "note" they include with a picture. It doesn't say GIA anywhere on it - of course I can't read Japanese either. And just what is a "sorting note" anyway. I don't know... but I get the feeling they put the GIA logo picture there to give the illusion that the stone has a GIA report - which is does not.

Maybe an expert will take a look and give thier opinion.

That's what I thought David, but didn't have the expertise to say it. There goes that sites reputation in my book! What idiots.

Thanks a lot for your help, I thought so that for that price there was definitively something wrong!! oh well, I will have to forget about that pink solitaire, and perhaps for the wedding ring get a platinum band with pink melee!!?

I don't know much about the company link posted that sells fancy colors, however I do know there are GIA offices in Japan. In fact, there are 2 of them.

http://www.gia.edu/about/40/gia_locations.cfm

http://www.giajpn.gr.jp/

Apparently they have been around for 30 years.

Read about it here:

I also know that GIA japan exists because I have been to Japan and visited some stores that had fancy colored diamonds that had the GIA reports.

I will say though, that fancy colored diamonds in Japan cost more than in the US - that's good thing for us over here

Thank you everyone for your help. I am looking for a 0.5ct or less round diamond, I want something understated but beautiful!

Ancienthills, you mentioned you "used them before", who exactly, GIA Japan or the website I mentioned?? What did you think of them?

Thanks,

Farah

I ended up returning it because in real life it appeared more brownish to me than on my monitor, but the transaction was smooth and I had no problem with the return. The stone was lovely, but not exactly what I had in mind, although well worth the price. I would buy from them again, especially in the case of a GIA cert.

David also has some pretty looking stones on my monitor

Webgal, it's interesting you mention about doctoring photos - that website picture of Ancienthills stone looks totally different to the ones she took herself - I mean, not even close. Ok ok I appreciate they probably have wackydoo cameras and things, but a good example of how pics can look totally different. Amazing!

I wonder why "GIA Japan" would have a stone witout a GIA report - I would have thought they would have a GIA report. Maybe i'm being a bit thick here?

I am drooling over the beautiful rings Webgal tried on

I am curious, Webgal, whether the .92c pink/ purple cushion looks like a kunzite when you see it in person. I love kunzites too, but I'm leaning toward a pale (but not too pale) diamond. Would this one fit the bill???

A couple of points. You mention pink diamonds but the one of the ones you are in love with has a GIA Report that calls it "purple". Purple is a whole different kettle of fish, much rarer, rarely available at all and extremely rare over .0.50 carats. than pink and that will affect the price.

On the subject of Herskowitz and Polnauer. I have done business with them and consider them to be a very professional and reliable firm.

Hope that helps.

Farah, have you made up your mind yet? If you are not going to go for this stone I am interested, but don't want to grab it out from under you. Normally I would pm you but consumers can't pm eachother, so please let me know. I know what it feels like to have one snatched after you post the link *happened to me with my perfect bubble gum pink pear* after painstaking research, so I don't want to buy it if you are still considering it, but if you aren't and it is fair game, please let me know.
Kind Regards, Beth

Can't ETA!
If it is purple you love here is an interesting one. No mention of paperwork though. It may be worth further investigation if it is in line with your tastes although I note that it is much larger than you said you were looking for.

valerie, I was thinking the same thing. A natural 1.50ct white diamond would be more in that range. There's just no way a natural purple diamond could be so little money. I was thinking it must be irradiated or something??? But it has such a pretty pale look, so maybe not. Maybe clarity enhanced??? I dunno But it has me curious as well.

The mysterious 'sorting memo' looks like a report by AGT (Japan Gem Trust).

http://www.agt.jp/

Good luck reading the site! Otherwise, try:

http://www.gia.edu/newsroom/608/246...ase_details.cfm

Not sure which of the Japanese words spell out 'sorting memo'. The little green papers carry the signature of AGT and GIA. It didn't occur to me to question why is that - don't get to see many of those anyway

The price tag makes me thing of a HPHT diamond with the color described a bit optimistically. I don't know any other treatment that might yield such a color - light pink. Not that I have found any old cut ones with this sort of enhancement just yet, but why not after all. The shop doesn't look like the type that might sell CZ or just plain empty words on a website. Who knows?

GIA does issue reports for HPHT enhanced diamonds indicating the presence of the treatment. Perhaps other labs would do the same too. So... if a potential buyer might be curious about what they are getting, certification should clear it out.

Richard Wise is an absolute AUTHORITY on gems. Go with his suggestions anyday.

Purple and red diamonds are thought to be the most rare colors that exist. Obviously, the rarer the higher the price.

As for Kunzite versus diamonds. The brillance cannot match a diamond's. I am a colored stone fan, but Kunzite is known for fading in color. If one was to wear it everyday, its color would surely fade. Today Morganite is considered a better alternative. You can also get some lovely pinks/pinkish-purples in sapphires and spinels.

Good luck w/ your treasure hunt.
