From prong to semi-bezel?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-07-06 , 11:09 PM

After two years of wearing my e-ring, I've noticed that my diamond gets banged around a lot. Currently, my e-ring diamond is set with four platinum prongs. I'd like to switch to a semi-bezel set to offer the diamond a bit more protection. Is it possible to switch out the prongs for a semi-bezil setting or will I need an entirely new ring? Sorry for the lack of techinical terms! I really like the band part of my e-ring and was hoping that I could just switch prongs.

Any advice would be most helpful! Thanks!

It's hard to say what can and can't be done without seeing the ring. You could switch to 6 prongs-- my choice since I tend to bang mine around a bit as well.

Looking at your ring it seems like the only good option would be to move to a 6 prong head. That would help the diamond stay secure. If you wanted better protection for the diamond itself, I'd think you'd need to turn to a cathedral type of setting or a semi-bezel, but I don't think you'll be able to transform your current ring easily. Others in the trade need to respond to give you advice. I am just an interested consumer...

For a semi bezel the ring would be even with the top of the band normally- you most likely would need to just get a new ring- but there are many that are stock ones.

Where do I get a new setting?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#7 @ 01-08-06 , 10:03 PM

Can you recommend an online option through which to purchase a semi-bezel setting? After I get the setting, I just take it to a local jeweler? Or do I send my current ring in for the stone replacement? Sorry to ask so many questions! I never thought I'd want to re-set my ring. It's tough to know where to start!

I would spend some time looking around local jewelers and look for a setting you like. If you buy it locally, then you won't have to send the ring in. Do you trust where it was originally purchased? Take some time and see and touch settings. If you feel more comfortable doing this buying on-line, go to the top of the page and visit some of the links under "stores." There you will find many reputable places. Some seem to specialize more in diamonds while others seem to have many settings. Take a look around before making the jump. I just got my wedding set re-done because I was rough on mine and it kept bending and cracking! Now I have a very solid, cathedral setting-- a huge improvement. Good luck, but be sure to look around before making to jump. Best of luck!

Thanks for all of your help and advice! I would go back to where my husband purchased the ring, but we moved clear across the country. Finding a reputable jeweler in a new city is tough. I'll make sure to look around and really find something I like before making the big leap.

Hi,
You might want to check out this site, I stumbled across it and I have no experience with them but they have a beautiful half bezel, very similar to the one I have but mine is yellow gold with a white gold half bezel

Hi,

It would be fairly easy to assemble a half bezel setting into your existing ring.

Here is an example of the half bezel:
