Buy diamond in hong kong?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 12-30-05 , 10:20 PM

Dear all,

we are on vacation in Hong Kong. We want to buy a diamond ring. Is it wise to buy this ring in Hong Kong? Or should I buy this ring in the Netherlands (where I come from)?

One shop in Hong Kong offers us the following:
- 0.52 ct
- D
- VVS2
- Hearts & Arrows
- IGI certificate
- Price: HKD 22.000, this is about USD 2.834

One shop in the Netherlands offers us the following:
- 0.5 ct
- D
- VVS1
- GIA certificate
- Price EUR 5.600, this is about USD 6.624

What is wise to do?

Please help.

With kind regards,

Deirdre

Ahh, the IGI cert.

The paper is worth more than the diamond. I suggest not.

In Hong Kong they also have rings with a GIA certificate. Is it wise to buy a ring (with a south african diamond) in Hong Kong with a GIA certifcate?

You can't say where a diamond is from after it's been mined, polished, and sold. To say it's from South Africa is generalizing. Diamonds are mined all over the world. And the real trick here is can they verify that the stone and the cert match while in Hong Kong. It's possible to have bogus certs, even with a GIA logo. Buy it only where you can have a gemologist check and see if it's the right stone for the cert.

Be careful and protect yourself.

Thanks!!

If it's the diamond is real, do you think it's a good deal! Or is it just not possible that such a diamond can be bought for HKD 22K?

The salesman told me that every diamond has an unique code which is captured in the stone and matched with a certificate. Is this true? Or can they capture the code afterwards?

If he's refering to the plot, then yes. It's like a "fingerprint" to the stone. That, and the measurements have to match as well. The GIA stone in question is a VVS1, and that's an inclusion that's hard to see even with a trained set of eyes. You really need a gemologist to verify that the stone you're buying is the same one on the paper. If he's refering to the laser inscription on the girdle, that can be forged. As a gemologist, I go by plot and by measurements before I say a stone is, or is not, a match to the cert.

Hello,

I've bought diamond jewelry in Hong Kong. I suggest sticking to chain jewelers (Larry, Prince's Jewellry, Chow Sang Sang, Chow Tai Fook) - they are extremely reputable and, if you know your diamonds and can bargian, you can get a good deal. I am from the US and have found diamond prices in HK to be very competitive.

Hope you are enjoying your trip, by the way. It's one of my favorite cities!
