Marquise dimensions
I am looking to buy a diamond for an engagement ring and my sweetheart prefers a marquise. I am looking for @ .85 to 1 carat. What are "good" dimensions for such a stone. The jeweler lists 3 numbers like 8.55 x 5.2 x 3.4. It's greek to me. also, how much does polish affect a stone especially when getting a "ideal" cut. Thirdly, how much does a role does florescence play into the look and sparkle, should I be concerned? Thanks, Capt. Kirk The preceding form was filled out on our Ask Forum page. |

Re: marquise dimensions
Aye Aye Captain. A two to one ratio for marquise seems to be a popular look, Eg; 10.00 mm length x 5.00 mm width = 2 to 1 ratio. I would go more on your intended's preferences with regard to the outline or dimensions of a marquise diamond. Most importantly, fancy shape diamonds must be seen as they can vary greatly in looks, sparkle, brilliance. This is especially true of marquise because of the bowtie effect. The polish grade in a marquise is not important IMO assuming it is at least "Good" Florescence is only a factor in the very rare cases where it can make a diamond look milky, hazy or oily. Be sure to look at any diamonds in natural light to check for this effect. Brian Live long & prosper |

Re: marquise dimensions
Look for Length to Width ratios that range from 1.7 to 2.0 with good facet definition and contrast which is supplied with a bit of a bow-tie and good shape outline. Attached is an example of a well cut Marquise that displays the above characteristics. |
