Hi, New here, and I think I've been had...
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 08-20-05 , 05:15 PM

I just bought a diamond ring on Ebay. Here is the Ebay item # 5023172792

I asked this guy exactly WHICH "independant" gemologivcal institute provided his report. I'm still awaiting a reply. Now that I've read a lot of the posts on this site, I'm sweating profusely out of fright that I have been had. Can someone please help me and tell what I need to do to get my money back in case I find out from a jeweler that I HAVE been had? *gulp* Please? *hard gulp*

I asked AFTER I bought the ring because I hadn't found this site, therefore gaining more knowledge about buying a diamond ring - let alone knowledge of ACTUAL lab names. I didn't think Ebayers could get away with false advertising. You live, you learn.

Yes, I know all of that. 3 days, blah, blah, blah. My concern is the "Idependant Gemological Institute." Is there such a company?? Aren't they ALL 'independant'?

I'm sure you are well aware seeing as you purchased from this person; the info I posted was to answer Irishs' question. Now to answer your question IGI does exsist but that doesn't mean they are any good. The two most respected labs are GIA and AGS all others are considered second rate because of the lax grading standards.

Lucy,
We understand you're panicked, but don't shoot the messengers. Breathe!!
If you go to what we know to be IGI you'll see their report doesn't match what he's showing. Plus given what he says about the stones, I highly doubt you bought a ring with those stats for that amount of money....Where are the close pics of the ring also?? or did I miss them?

Lucy, welcome.

The other DT folks have given you some good advice.

I am confused by the listing though. It states it's a .48 CT TW, and lists a single set of measurements for one stone, but then shows a 3-stone ring ??? Those are two different things! Which did you think you were buying? A single stone or a 3-stone ring? That right there tells me that something isn't right. And the Internally Flawless grading has got to be bogus for that price!

I'd ask the seller more questions before you pay him a dime! If you've already paid, I hope you can get a refund! EEK!!

The ring came in a Zales card flap-type thing with the credit card-like report with it, stating the value of over $1,000. I took it to a jeweler, and they have verified all the "stats." So, thankfully, my prayers have been answered. I wasn't swindled. The ring is worth at least $2,000, from his own inspection. I think I'll still send it off to GIA. I think I'll have a better time selling it if I do this. How do I go about sending it off to them, and how much will it cost?
