Would a GIA report on a clarity-enhanced diamond come back sooner?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 07-11-05 , 07:49 PM

I sent my 1.53 ct. pear-shaped diamond to GIA (I bought it on ebay several years ago), and GIA received it on 6/27/05. We have a registered mail parcel waiting for us at the post office (which I can't get until tomorrow since it's after hours) from GIA that was mailed out on 7/8/05. That's only 9 business days. I have always heard that it takes about a month to get anything back from GIA. I know GIA won't grade enhanced or treated stones, so is it wrong to jump to the conclusion that the diamond is treated and therefore ungradable since I got it back so soon? Experts, please advise me . . .

Not necessarily. It would depend on how your diamond was treated. If it wsa fracture filled GIA will not grade the diamond because the treatment is not permanent and the apparent clarity could change if/when the filler is removed or comes out of the stone. If your diamond was laser-drilled yes GIA will issue a report on the diamond because the drill holes are a permanent feature within the stone. Hope that helps.

Well, my diamond was supposedly not fracture-filled or laser-drilled, according to the ebay description. I am sending it in so that I can see if this is true and also to see the true color/clarity of the diamond.

If it was sold as clarity enhanced on eBay, it is most likely fracture filled. And GIA will not grade those stones.

Given the time line you are offering for sending and receiving, I would bet that GIA took one look at it, saw the fracture filling, and sent it back to you.

No way to know for sure until you open the box. But I would say the above is the most likely scenario.

My diamond is considered "natural" and not treated in any way, according to the seller. I am now getting very nervous that it was enhanced in some way and wondering what recourse I have if it was enhanced. I'll post details when I open it tomorrow.

lwold, which GIA lab did you send to? NY or CA?

I happen to live within 5 or 10 minutes of the CA GIA ... (man, I keep meaning to go and take a tour there) Anyway, when I called them once they told me they were running about 7 days.. or something like that. And I remember thinking how fast that was compared to what I had heard for a time frame.

I guess it really depends on how the stars and the planets are lined up for you. The PO might have gotten a really fast donkey to zip it over there, where the GIA folks just happen to be having a slow-ish week, and then put it back out with an even faster donkey for the trip back.

Or ... they've sent it back not graded. 9 days is a bit soon, but it's not really, really obvious that they took one look and returned it. If you give it a few days to get there and a few days back, you've still got three or four good days in there where they might have been able to grade it. ???

Please DON'T leave us hanging! I hate missing the endings of things! Come back and let us know how it went.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it all went smoothly!

Thanks DiamLady. I haven't picked up the package yet. I sent it to GIA New York. I heard GIA Cal is faster. I won't leave you hanging. I'll post the report later (if there is a report!).

I opened the package, and there is a GIA report! It is a real diamond that is not enhanced or treated. I am posting the report details on another thread, "My GIA report on my ebay diamond."

Yeah, well unfortunately, there is no thread by that name that I can find.

Rather than go to the trouble of telling us about another thread and such, why not just post the answer here?

I have a feeling that you have a fracture filled diamond from EBAY.

I will look forward to seeing your report....here!

This mystery has already been solved. Have a look here at the thread you were not able to find.

lwold...congrats to you!! What a sigh of relief...you're right...taking photos of diamonds is hard to do, but if you love the ring and stone, then more power to you!!
