How do you get a synthetic diamond (or ring with them) appraised?
Hi all, I am in the early stages (research, still saving) of the process of putting together an engagement ring. I am leaning towards ordering three Gemesis blue diamonds (approx .5 carat center and two .20 carat sides) from an online merchant and then getting the ring put together locally. What I don't know about is how one gets either the diamonds appraised (I have no reason not to trust the retailer, but I would still like to check them out in time to return them if there is some sort of problem) or how I would go about getting the overall ring appraised when it's done (the ring I am thinking of runs about $1800). Any thoughts? I should note that the retailer doesn't get an EGL certificate (from what I have seen this is the only kind available for synthetics, but please let me know if I have that wrong) for anything under a carat by default (though I could request one as I understand it), but I'd like to get the diamond checked out by someone different anyway since I am new at this stuff and want to be sure it's a real synthetic diamond. In case it is relevant, I'm in the Boston area. I've enjoyed learning from this forum over the last week and change. It is a little complicated since I have to do it all from my workplace... the s.o. doesn't know that (after all these years) I am finally getting organized. Thanks for any advice or help! C (not showing full name only to remain somewhat secretive) |

Re: How do you get a synthetic diamond (or ring with them) appraised?
Hi optimist, I think one very good approach to this type of appraisal is to call Independent appraisers and be straight forward on the phone and tell them you have synthetic diamonds you need appraised and would like to have a unbiased opinion on. You also should be straight forward and ask them if they have ever appraised or have experience with synthetic diamonds and what that experience is. If you get an appraiser who has a lot of experience you will be sure to know from the conversation you have with him/her. Hopefully if they have not had any or little experience with synthetics, they will tell you. What I would not do is make an appointment with an appraiser and not tell him they are synthetic. This appraisal is hopefully to get the diamonds checked out and to make sure they are synthetic and to possibly get them insured. It would be very uncomfortable for both of you to have the appraiser say they are natural. Ask the appraiser if he/she has the equipment to distinguish between natural and synthetic. There are ways appraiser gemologists can distinguish natural from synthetic however; it is much easier on loose diamonds and larger stones. There are lists of independent appraisers on this and other websites to choose from. Good Luck! |

Re: How do you get a synthetic diamond (or ring with them) appraised?
Thanks rbrilliant. I certainly wasn't planning to hide the fact the the stone was a synthetic, but I wasn't sure whether I had to take special steps to find an appraiser for the synthetic stones or whether I should just start calling around. My guess, though this is really a guess, is that for many of these people it would likely be the first synthetic that they have seen, but I could be way off about that. Also, it's hard for me to understand what determines the price of these stones. Anyway, sounds like calling around is the best approach. Thanks! optimist |

Re: How do you get a synthetic diamond (or ring with them) appraised?
Hi optimist, I think you will find someone that will tell you if the diamonds are something they have experience with. It might be beneficial for you to post a new thread asking if anyone knows any appraisers that do have solid experience with synthetics. You might get quite a number of responses. Again, The best of luck to you! |
