Thanks everyone for the assistance and kind comments. I think you've made great points so I've revised my specs and budget a bit and now have a revised question as well! I'm looking to get a pair of studs for my wife with each stone being between: .9 and 1.0 ct, G-H, Si1-I1, very good cut, ideal, or Hearts & Angels. Here are my questions: What do you all think of the prospects of purchasing loose diamonds and then having them set? Any opinions on a place called USA Certified diamonds? So if I took such a route, how then would I go about getting it set? A local jeweler? What are the thoughts on an ideal setting for a pair of round 2 CT TW? I read on one site about a 3 pronig martini setting being the best fit. Any opinions on that setting? How about an antique setting? Thanks again. |

I love three prong earrings! Martini's are great. So that would be my two cents on the setting. Diamond prices depend on weight categories. To get the most bang for your buck I would suggest getting stones tht are just under the carat price break. If you go that route you could up a color grade and/or clarity. But if you or your wife really want 2ctw get what will make you happiest.

Hi RiverRat, I've made very, very few diamond purchases of any significance, but in each case, I've been very particular and very specific about what I wanted. It wasn't so much that I knew what colour or clarity I wanted, as it was that I knew what the diamond needed to "look like". Looking at loose stones allowed me to make a much more informed choice: I could see the differences side-by-side, and decide for myself whether (for instance) a G or H stone would be fine, or if I really "needed" D-F. My jeweler was absoutely wonderful. He listened and took notes while I described what I was after, and he ordered a few pairs of loose stones for me to look at "on spec". The stones we decided on were EXACTLY what I had imagined them being (and then some), and the experience left me feeling satisfied that I had selected THE PERFECT DIAMONDS for my budget. I've had to save up for this project for more than five years, and it was very important to me to feel confident that my hard-earned savings were buying me not just a pair of excellent, quality diamonds -- but a pair of diamonds that I will absolutely cherish and adore. They're being set in platinum filigree, BTW. I'll see if my jeweller has some pictures I can post. ------------------ Trilby |
