I'm about to lose my mind on this issue. Mom is insisting that my brother should be my best man, explaining that this is a position of honor reserved for family. The problem is, my brother and I aren't close. I really don't want this to be a major issue, but she is digging her heels in. Any ideas or suggestions for dealing with this without hurting anyone's feelings?

Thanks,
Josh

With all due respect your mother is full of ca-ca! The position of best man is that of your best friend. The one who you want to stand up for you to witness and share your wedding day should be someone You Want not your mother. The problem is, my brother and I aren't close. I really don't want this to be a major issue, but she is digging her heels in. Any ideas or suggestions for dealing with this without hurting anyone's feelings?Your mother can't use your wedding day to fix relationships between siblings--wrong time and place. you need to politely tell her this isn't her wedding, she got to do it her way when she got married now it's your turn

Thanks,
Josh

Thanks Irish. I totally understand that, and I know that will most likely be the position I am forced to take. The person that best fits my perception of "Best Man" is indeed my best friend. Afterall, the man introduced me to my fiance, and has been a part of both of our lives for some time now. Don't misunderstand, there really isn't anything wrong between my brother and I, we just don't have a relationship. I can't remember the last time we had a conversation. He hasn't been a part of my life for about ten years now. It just does not make sense to select him simply because he is my older brother.

My problem is I hate emotional strife. I can't deal with people being upset or hurt because they didn't have it their way. My mom truly believes that I am insulting my brother (and the entire family for that matter) by not asking him to be my best man.

Josh,
I'm sorry you're being put in this position. Weddings can be very stressful when family members have agendas. Hang tough, be polite, but stand your ground....this your wedding after all.

Why not ask your brother if he minds not being best man?

I'm liking the eloping idea more and more.
Oh, and I have every intention of having my brother as a groom's man.

Anyone have opinions about two best men?
