I have a quick question... My gf and i are soon to get engaged. She was previously married and is considering giving me her previous engagement ring to "trade in" on a new one...

What is proper etiquette in dealing with a situation like this? Obviously the money we got for the ring would help the financial situation we are both going to deal with... but is it proper?

Who cares if it's 'proper' if she has proper title to it. The only thing I can see going wrong is if the divorce was so recent that he may try to claim the ring. In that case I would just make sure she has proper title.

I think it's very sensible of both of you. You save some money and dispose of something that has no positive use for her anymore.

If you want to get all symbolic, you can just choose to think that her previous marriage was a stepping stone to where she is now and that the ring will act as a stepping stone to a symbol of her new life.

Good luck with your decision, and let us know what happens.

As long as it's her ring and not currently disputed, the she should do whatever she wants with it.

My 2 MIL's have diamonds from their previous sets in their new ones!

Worry is most often a prideful way of thinking that you have more control over life and it's circumstances than you actually do.

I agree, reuse, recycle & renew! Since the marriage is over and it doesn't look as though she is expected to return it, as long as she wants to help with the new ring, take it. At this point, to her, it probably doesn't have any meaning anyway. Make it something you both want and will treasure for always. Good Luck!

Wow fast replys... thx.

Yeah I can see what youre saying, so that will work out. It is not in dispute and everything is finalized on her past divorce. She says she would like me to use the ring if i can to save us a little money.... We are kind of on an accelerated plan because we want to get married in Maui in May.

Any ideas on how you go abouttrading in a ring or whatnot? The dealor her previous ring was through is not going to be the dealor i buy a ring from now (most likely)....Dont know what to do there....
