How do I know I'm getting a good deal?
Is there a generally accepted percentage a diamond should be apraised at relative to the price? I'm considering buying from a friend's broker. My friend had his diamond independently appraised at twice what he paid. Is this common and does it constitute a good bargain? |

If a diamond is properly appraised, it should be close to, if not at, the selling price. Mainly because the selling price establishes the market value of the item. However, with the way the appraisals are working nowdays, I have no doubt as to why questions such as yours come up. In reality, you should not attempt to make any diamond buying decision based on anyone's appraisal. Appraisals are totally subjective as far as price goes, and you can get 10 appraisals and you will get 10 different prices. The real comparison should be quality to quality...and...actual selling price to actual selling price.. By comparing the cut, color, clarity, carat weight, and actual selling price of one diamond dealer to another, you will get a far more accurate comparison than trying to compare one person's appraisal against another. As proven by IGI and the EGL with their Universal Gemological Appraisal (or whatever they are calling it)...appraisals can be made to say anything the seller wants. Compare actual selling prices along with qualities to get your best concept. Then, you can go to someone like David Atlas or another quality gemologist here to insure that the quality you compared is what was delivered to you. That is the most accurate method of diamond shopping in my opinion. Robert James FGA, GG www.YourGemologist.com www.SchoolofGemology.com |

Hi, Welcome to DT I agree with all of the info Robert touched on with regard to appraisals. I think the best way for you to get a feel for "relative values" and whether or not a diamond is a "good bargain" is to post whatever info you can get from the broker here on this forum. The members here will be glad to help you and offer advice and opinions once they have that info. Brian |
