Can a setting make the diamond look bigger?
Would love everyone's opinion on this. Can the setting/mounting itself make the illusion that the diamond is bigger than it actually is??? The preceding form was filled out on our Ask DT page. |

hi dodo, I think it can make it look bigger especially if its in a pave setting that "frames it" so to speak. heres a 2.06 ct. champagne diamond. it looks really big to me set this way, and very pretty! http://www.diamondring.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=51522

Keetercat beat me to it! I was going to say that mine definitely looks bigger in the new mounting, especially since I had a frame of reference with the old setting. Not that 2 carats is not already BIG, but I have a size 7 ring finger and I was disappointed that a 2 carat pear looked smaller than I thought it would. My favorite look is the pave stones around the outside of the diamond (like mine ). Also the old-fashioned illusion heads and the ones that look kind of square can make them look bigger. With 3-stone setting, proper proportions with the side stones can maximize the look of the center. And, of course, a well-cut quality diamond will look bigger than a poorly cut one.Christine |

Look at this dodo, |

Of course! Besides, to me, a set stone always looks bigger than when its loose. But there are settings that make a stone look particularly bigger. To me, bezel-set stones seem bigger, especially if the bezel is white metal. That frame seems to add some diameter to the diamond. Also, settings that set the diamond high makes the stone seem bigger. The diamond is more "in your face." Of course, one needs to consider one's lifestyle for this sort of setting. Some women have very active lifestyles, and this sort of setting wouldn't work for them.

I have the Tiffany modern version of the old square illusion settings. My ering is .80 and it appears 1.25. I can put it side by side with my friends 1.28 ( both cut very good) and it is really appearing to be the same. Next to my moms 1.00 it is huge! I originally did it as I like the box settings and never realized this would happen-Only in the shower you can clearly see the edging but in any other light you cannot at all. People always say- how many carats is that!!! I'll add a pic. Look close and see the edging- but when it is sparkling you cannot see and even in this dull lighting I just took the pic in- when Ihold a 7 mm stone up to it it really looks about the same size. I highly recommend this setting!!! |

Dodo I'm trying to answer this question myself... for my birthday I'm having a 0.25ct diamond... When done well, I think a white gold bezel with a yellow gold band can make the diamond look a lot bigger... but then also I think simple prongs allow a lot of the diamond to show which make it look bigger too... This is a bit off topic, but lots of people have told me that a bezel set stone does not sparkle as much as a prong set stone. Can someone tell me is there any truth to this? Ali |

Those starlight ring are amazing! I love the claw set ones - the claws over the invisible bezel really seem to enlarge the diamond. |

hi ali, from what I've seen, when a diamond is bezel set it seems to me that not as much light enters the stone from every angle like it would when it would be set in prongs. I know that it is supposed to be about light entering from the top in relation to sparkle etc. but to me this doesnt seem like its always true. when completely bezel set so that the stone is covered, it seems to me to look a little darker also than in a prong set. it looks "richer" or deeper in depth to me would be the best way to describe what I see. if you are going to do the pave/framed type of setting (which I love!) you can always have the underside of the diamond left open to let in light, so that the pave is like a ring around the diamond, but you can still see the rest of the diamond from the side. I have been trying to find a pic of what I am describing, but I cant find it! sorry. hope some of this makes sense! I dont always word things right....

I agree 100% that a well done bezel setting makes the diamond look bigger. My friend wore a bezel set solitaire that looked GREAT for years. Last year for her anniversary, she had it reset as the center stone in a 3 stone ring. Let em tell you, when she showed me the 3 stone, I had no idea that her old stone had been used as the center, until she told me. It looked half the size! Of course, I did not tell her that, everyone has her own preferences. |

Where can I find this setting in US? |
|
|
My center stone is .94 sides are .19 ea.
Everyone says that the center stone looks bigger than 1 ct. |

I think it can. I have a 1/2 carat round stone which was set in a tiffany setting with a very thin band, it looked delicate but small. I just had it set into a half bezel, 3.5 mm rounded dome type band, built up a bit on the shoulders and I think it looks a lot bigger. I'm sorry I don't have a before picture. I think a little width in the band helps. |

I bought some small bezel set studs (0.25ctw) last year, and they are so dull. They are G VS's and they're really pretty when you look at them up close and in direct lighting, but when I'm wearing them, not so much as a sparkle. I hardly ever wear them because of that. I think it's because so little light enters them. Maybe I'll get them reset into prong settings one of these days. |
