Best way to clean stainless watches?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 02-26-04 , 01:50 PM

what is the best thing to disolve grime and oils on stainless watches?

I heard sudsy ammonia corodes stainless.
So what to use?

As oils and such are harder to get off.
Very much about the diamond bezel too.

I would take it to your jeweler, have them remove the band and soak it in lye for a couple days. You won't believe the amount of grime that will come off!

Or, you can remove the band yourself and soak it in jewelry cleaner or an ultrasonic.

The lye is the ultimate cleaner.

As long as it is stainless steel and not plated metal, it should be fine in the cleaner.

My father soaks the bands of gold and stainless steel watches in methylated spirits.

He sits them in a shallow dish, and gives them a shake or loose brushing, after a few hours they look brand new.

Lye, aka caustic soda frightens me. It does clean anything, it cleans everything. I work with refinery's where they use pure caustic liquor in the process of making alumina powder.
It dissolves flesh, and caustic burns are horrific.

Anyway, the m-spirits work just as well. After soaking one of my grandfathers gold Rolex's bands in it, I couldn't believe the black silt-like stuff that had accumulated in the dish while it soaked. Very effective.

The gunk that can accumulate in metal watchbands is truly disgusting. In the summer especially, sweat combined with sunscreen and grime can create a black gunk. I didn't even realize I had a problem until I daily noticed black, sticky marks on my wrist when I removed my watch at bedtime :-(

Tag Heuer instructions recommend using soap and water to clean the grime. I use a toothbrush with liquid soap and it works great.

Methylated spririts, according to a UK to US word converter, can be found in the US called meths, rubbing alcohol, dentured alchohol, or altered ethanol.

They add a purple dye and methanol to the ethanol here, to create methylated spirits, as ethanol could be consumed, the additions render it non-drinkable.

It's common to hear someone unnacustomed to drinking something strong, like Southern Comfort, say "This is disgusting, it's like drinking metho!" - Which implies the drink is so awful it's the equivilant of consuming industrial spirits...

So to get back on topic, it cleans wtach bands really well, and being alcohol, evaporates easily and all traces of it are removed when you give the watch band a final brushing, and rinse with water.

Be very careful with anything caustic! It can cause serious injury to the skin if not used carefully! I work with chemicals everyday and I have burned myself before...NOT fun...
Also, with mineral spirits (hydrocarbon solvents) can be hazardous to the skin, as well as inhillation. If you do use mineral spirits for cleaning, PLEASE make sure that if you have small children, they are kept FAR away from these. If they are accidentally consumed, they can cause respiration into the lungs and death.

I use liquid hand soap, water, and a soft toothbrush to clean my watches, especially the ones I know to be waterproof. I sometimes remove the bracelets and run them in the ultrasonic with a tsp of sudsy ammonia for a few minutes. You want to get the grime and grit out of the bracelet as it will wear the pins and links and the bracelet will stretch.

Lucily I have enough watches so that none of them gets a lot of wear and I keep them clean. I would not use anything cawstick however.

Do not place the watch itself in an ultrasonic cleaner, just the bracelet.

i use hot water, a squirt of dish detergent and prop the watch up in my ultrasonic. the watch part hangs over the lip. amazing crud, black stuff, and oils come off the band.

sometimes i feel like a 12 year old, saying, "ewww....gross!"

Hello, I think the best way to clean stainless steel watches is by using WATCH SPRAY. It is a safe and gentle watch cleaner that is ideal for all metals and crystals. It is environmentally friendly, it smells great, and it rids the watch of oils, dirt, and fingerprints. You can't compare it to standard jewelry cleaners. Try it and you will find out why watch owners around the world place their trust in the product.

It was the first watch care product to premiere in the International Watch Magazine, the store museum at The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, and Timezone.com.

I think cotton with some water is a good way to clean the watch as its dial is very sensitive

I simply wear the watch in the shower and soap it up once or twice. If your wrist turns black you are working the oxides from the band. If the watch is not water resistant to 30 M or more, I would remove the band and soak, then wash with body-wash.
