I found an older ring that was my moms or my grandmothers. It is VERY clear and BLUE sapphire ring. I was just wondering if they had synthetic sapphires about 20 to 25 yrs ago?? IF so how can I tell if this is real or not? It is in a gold ring

THANKS for any info you can give me!!

PICTURE to come later!

Interesting question - I have been wondering the same thing. I have a ring that was my grandmothers - with a very blue sapphire in the center, surrounded by tiny seed pearls - almost like Princess Di's ring. The sapphire looks like it might have some scratches on it - and to be honest I don't know how to tell if it is costume jewelry or the real thing.

Dberg is your sapphire a real bright blue?? OR is it a deep blue?

Synthetic sapphire

has been around since the early 1900's, so that's a real possibility.

A trained gemologist can usually tell natural from synthetic from absorption spectra, and perhaps inclusions, color banding, etc.

I know this isn't scientific, but when I see a sapphire, especially a larger one, that looks too perfect and too beautifully blue, it usually isn't natural.

I was unaware that they had synthetic sapphires out that long!!

Itbit
that is what I was thinking too!!

I will have to take this in and have it tested. It does look too clear to be real
