hello, i'm planning on proposing to my girlfriend of four years. all of a sudden i realized that proposing requires a lot of preperation do all women wear thier engagement ring on the left hand or can it be worn on the right hand? (to keep it from harm) the reason this is important is that the jeweller has warned me that once the ring is made, the size can not be changed (due to the design we've discussed). i've attached an image of a similar style for the curious so i need to figure out which hand to have it made for. thanks |

In different cultures it is worn on different hands. In the United States the engagement ring is worn on the left hand. The ring you have chosen is not a traditional engagement ring. It is beatuiful though. It may be difficult to size this ring in the future if her sizes change. Good luck. |

I wouldn't worry about her handedness. I am left-handed too, and have never had a problem. I think really, having it on my left hand makes me more aware of it being there and more careful because of it. |

thank you both for the advice. it was quite reassuring. my east indian heritage doesn't have a tradition for diamond engagement rings, so this forum has been invaluable. the style of ring i've chosen is apparantly popular as an anniversary ring according to a friend of mine. it's called an "eternity ring". the particular situation with my girlfriend has had me quite apprehensive about how to go about this because she is adamant that she doesn't want a diamond engagement ring, and that she doesn't find rings with portruding stones appealing. well for the style, i know she likes slick modernism, but as for diamonds, all my girl friends tell me that a lot of girls say they don't want rings but really they do! so i figure that i'll play it safe and get a ring, so she doesn't miss out on this important tradition (and frankly, i'm really enjoying doing all this behind her back!!) but get something a little sleek and unassuming. (and if she turns out to want a big diamond, we can do that together once we're done grad school and working!) it's nice to have a place to talk about this. |

The ring is very classic and beautiful. I am sure she will be pleased with it. It is a style that's popular for anniversary rings and wedding bands. A ring with stones that go all the way around the ring, instead of just being on the top part of the ring, is usually called an eternity ring. Your friend was right! I'm glad DT has been helpful for you. There's a lot of information to be found here. Moral support, too. ![]() Please keep us posted on your plans and how things go! Lucy |
