Earlier this year, I researched and purchased an engagement ring from Blue Nile. Unfortunately, the relationship with my fiance did not work out and I'm now left with an engagement ring, but no engagement.

What is the best way to resell an engagement ring while trying to recoup as much of the original price as possible?

The details of the ring are as follows:

Blue Nile Signature Round

Measurements: 6.71 - 6.73 x 4.07 mm
Cut: AGS Ideal
Polish: AGS Ideal
Symmetry: AGS Ideal
Proportions: AGS Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: VS2
Carat: 1.105
Flourescence: None

Table Depth: 60.6%
Table Diameter: 56%
Crown Angle: 34.9
Pavilion Angle: 41
Girdle: Faceted .9% to 1.5%
Cutlet: Pointed

I have both the original AGS and GCAL certification documents.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about what happened. Well, first I might try listing it here or on ebay....if you go to a jeweler, you will lose a bit of money. I recently sold mine (to upgrade with a different jeweler) and lost 3500 on a 8500 dollar stone.

Thank you luluhb for your sympathy.

How should I go about having a successful private e-sale?

I'm sure that plenty of details and pictures of the ring and documents will go a long way.

What's the best way to handle the payment situation? Will Paypal be sufficient?

I feel like I'm just as at risk as the potential buyer. Are there ways to maintain buyer confidence without seeming suspicious or leaving myself vulnerable?

Thanks in advance to any and all input.

You should read The DeBeers Invention.
Look it up in the search function.

It will shock you about the reselling of a diamond.

elementalism, welcome to DT. I'm sorry you came here under these circumstances.

If you are looking in to a private sale, do some research on escrow services. I've never done it but if you do a search, you will find more info on it. You are not alone, we have had several in your situation come through here. Another option is to list the stone under consignment at a trusted jeweler.

Unfortunately you are not the first to have gone through this, and I've seen people usually suggest some kind of escrow service for security for both the buyer and seller. Even still, you need to do your homework, there are always sharks out there.

Good luck and please keep us posted. Hope it all works out for you.

Have you thought about asking Blue Nile what their policy is? Let's face it, you will probably be buying another ring at some point in time. See what kind of options they offer. Cindy, New England Gem Lab
