Thanks in advance for any help...

I'm looking to purchase a diamond for an engagement ring. I have a close family friend who is a diamond broker and can sell me a diamond at cost. However his diamonds are not GIA certified.

From what I've read on GIA's website I would need to take the diamond to a local jeweler and request for them to have the diamond sent to a GIA lab for certification.

Is that correct? And if so, are there any jewelers you recommend in the Newburgh, NY area? If not, the NYC area? Thanks again for any help.

Since your close friend is a broker in the business, why not have him send it there for the cert. It is going to be acouple of weeks till you get it back (4 to 6 I believe). Beside that he should get the dealers fee from GIA GTL, where as if you took it to another jeweler they would, they would charge you a premium over cost. Ed

Hi,

Welcome to DT

Any broker can find any stone they want from any Lab they choose.

It sounds like the "broker" wants to sell you one of his stones and not the stone you want.

Even if he does not deal in GIA ( for what reason I cannot imagine) A close family friend should find what you want.

Just my quick take.

Thanks for all of your help. I've discussed this further with my friend, the broker, and he said he can get it GIA certified but it would cost about $250. In his opinion, it may not be worth it for the kind of diamond I'm looking for. (Princess or Radiant cut, .75 to 1.0ct, D-F color, VS2 or better, ideal cut) Does anyone have any feedback on this? Thanks.

Hi jarhoops

Post some of the specific stones with pricing.

As my recommendation will depend on whether you are being offered wholesale prices or not.

I've found the diamond... Good deal?

I went to see my friend today and he showed me an alternative to the princess and radiant; the cushion cut. I really liked it, it seemed to have more "depth" than the princess and had an antique look. Any recommendations on the cushion cut in general?

The diamond he has is .82ct, D color, VS1. He said he can get it for $2800. Does this sound like a wholesale price? Thanks for your help.

Stone shape is personal preference.

The price is good, it is a couple hundred (200.00) dollars over a typical wholesale "buying price" for D /VS-1

But right on for a "memo" (may sell, maybe not) price

Please let me know your opinions on the cushion cut (compared to princess or radiant).

Also, please let me know how reasonable the price is. Thanks for all of the input I've received already...
