That is a nice chain. Your picture looks great.
Yes, I'm sure that your watches would be a welcome addition at the Watch Forum.

As you can tell, I am new to this website. What do you folks do, do most of you stay in a favored forum, or do you skip around when you go on to another subject? If you wanted to discuss a watch, would you stay here, or go over to "Watches". There seem to be nice people on this website, I have put it up on my favorites.

This is a great site. On-topic or off-topic, the information and camaradarie are great. The easiest way to navigate the site, in my opinion, is to regularly hit "Combined Day's Posts." It enables a user to keep current on all areas of the site.
Welcome Aboard :-)

Thank you, now you can teach me how to create and post an icon of myself like you have done! I guess I shouldn't look "cute" like you, but "handsome" would be just fine.

8131, Go to 'My DT' at upper left-hand corner, click 'Edit Preferences,' a thank-you message will appear, then on the upcoming site, go to the bottom, hit 'Change Avatar,' then insert your custom avatar by clicking 'Browse.' Click 'Submit Modification.'
Your custom avatar must meet certain size specifications. Also, when you choose a photo or drawing to shrink with Photoshop, make sure it has plenty of contrast or you will get a washed-out image since you will be shrinking it so small.
Choose an image and then use similar numbers to mine below. It is advantageous to have either one or both of the two numbers below to be 60, as you will get the largest avatar possible.
My face avatar dimensions are:
Pixel Dimensions: 8K
Width: 60 pixels
Height: 43 pixels
NOTE: If either one of those numbers is larger than 60, it will not work!!
Document Size:
Width: 0.833 inches
Height: 0.597 inches
Resolution: 72 pixels/inch
Constrain Proportions and Resample Image boxes are both checked: Bicubic
Good luck :-)

Yeah, not gaudy like a lot of Rolexes, very simple design from 1955, that's why I asked about the 9KT factor, appearance may trump gold content. I don't want my son to look like a pimp!

Shanks break, settings fail...

Hmmmmm, I have to say that my experience is very different. I'm in Australia where the standards are either 9K or 18K gold. On my left hand I've worn an 18k wedding and engagement set for the last 20 years. On my right hand ( I'm right handed) I have worn a 9k sapphire ring every day for slightly longer.

The sapphire ring on my right hand would get more "use" than that on my left and it has fewer marks/scratches than my wedding set. It is not tarnished at all and neither are the two 9K gold chains that I have worn constantly for the last 12 years.
(I know I shouldn't ...but I bathe, sleep and swim with them on so they've had an awful lot of wear)

Just another point of view...

Actually, this issue has been discussed before on DT and I agree with everything that Auditmann has said. British 9ct gold (of any colour) is not inherently better or stronger than any other carat weight, it's simply cheaper. Lots of jewellers honestly think that it is stronger and will advise you to go for it in preference, but really it's an old wives tale - well, an old jewellers tale.

I would go for 18ct gold every time, if money would allow. Having said that, I have LOTS of 9ct and 14kt jewellery for a combination of the following reasons;
a) because I liked the design
b) because it was reasonably priced
c) because that's what's generally available

Unless you restrict yourself to a much smaller selection of only 18ct or higher carat jewellery or have everything custom made, you'll find it difficult in the UK to avoid 9ct jewellery.

One last comment:
I read that British 18 carat gold is better than American 18kt gold as, by law, American jewellers can make 18kt gold that in fact only contains 17.5 karats of gold. This small difference, it appears, can however, make a big difference chemically to the strength and hardness of the finished gold. It gets very technical from this point - too technical for me - but the upshot is that if you can, buy British 18 ct gold in preference to American 18kt, because it will be stronger, less brittle and so perform better over time. (I'll let the experts argue over this last bit )

Thanks to the Australian and British for your perspective :-)
Though I do prefer high karat gold, I agree that if one very much likes the design of a 9K or 10K piece of jewelry, then go ahead and buy it.
I have bought a few pieces of 10K jewelry because I liked the design, especially when these pieces were vintage.

Those are gorgeous! Is the contrast what they call "rose gold". Are there three colors of gold there?

by law in the United States anything under 10k cannot be called gold because it would be less than 40% gold. Europe allows 9k to still be called gold. In my opinion the only reason to go lower that 14k is to save money, not to make the allow stronger. I also think that the color and luster is not as nice as at least 14k.

Having been born and raised in one of the "colonies" (South Africa to be specific), 9ct and 18ct were the only choices available. As a matter of preference I have always chosen 9ct, or now that I'm in the States 10Kt. Personally, I prefer the warmer tone of the 9ct gold - it has a richer hue that I like, and unfortunately, when choosing to have my diamonds set, have been unable to get a jeweler to make me my rings in 10kt. That being said, however, the 10kt here in the USA, is not quite the same shade as the 9ct from Europe or South Africa. Ours tends to look more like Portuguese gold, or as you guys call it, Rose gold.

I know what you mean, sparklee. I've seen many pieces of great foreign 9K jewelry in antique shops and estate cases at jewelry stores. The gold is rose colored and bright & beautiful.

I've found that 18 and 22 carat gold is usually much more yellow than lesser carat gold, as you would expect. Pure gold, 24 carat, is the deepest yellow, but too soft for jewellery.

9ct, 10k and 14k can all be quite yellow in colour. It depends on the metals with which they are alloyed. On the other hand, a poor mix produces a brassy look, which is horrible. I think that with the lower carat stuff, you have to look at each piece and decide if the mix is a good colour. Don't say no to a lovely piece of jewellery just because it's 9 or 10 carat. Like diamonds, you have to judge each one on its merits.

Is the karat of the gold really important when the piece is well done?

I have seen many pieces that are very well done in lower karats and also I have seen pieces done in platinum that are an absolute garbage.
I think that the workmanship is more important than the karat of the gold.
Of course that a piece done WELL in a higher karat gold will have more value, but many times what people buy is the design and not the quality of the metal.

Some people stain the lower karat gold and this is due to the PH of the skin but other not and can wear lower karat gold pieces without a single allergic reaction, for them the lower karat gold jewelry is a nice option because they can buy two or more pieces for the price of one in 18k gold.
