I took it to a jeweler and had her test them with that beepy thing. Yes indeed, the crude rose-cut stones in this brooch that I bought for FOUR DOLLARS are REAL. I think the metal is silver, although I don't know why it isn't more tarnished, considering how old this pin must be. It's unmarked.

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to its age and origin? Or tell me anything at all about it? Here are photos of the back and front. The pin part is soldered on.

I can't believe it! They're real!

It's hard to tell from the photo, but the brooch has 8 or possibly 9 diamonds: one in the center, one in each of the little round pieces inside the big petals, and one (or possibly two, I can't quite tell) on the point of one of the petals. The little five-pointed flowers between the petals look like they should have stones in them, but they just have metal. And one of them is missing.

You've done what most of us can only dream of doing; hitting the "Flea Market Lottery" so to speak!

Many, if not most, rose cut diamonds were set in silver, I believe.

CONGRATULATIONS!

They still make silver jewelry by hand and set it with rose-cut diamonds? That's so cool! Maybe not quite as cool as finding a centuries-old diamond pin for $4, but still pretty great in our machine-ridden age. Thanks for the info, Dave.

Well done! I found a pretty little gold and diamond ring (suitable for someone with slim fingers) at a market stall. The style looks like art deco to me. I only paid 10 ($25?) I think that was a good deal. The 3 diamonds are small but very sparkly.

There are bargains out there, thank heavens!
