Is there much apparent difference between 4.95mm & 5.49mm? diamond? or is a half a mm
not very noticeable in something this size?

Obviously, I know opinions may vary.

I am trying to figure if these would be too small for a solitaire.

You probably will not notice this very small difference in size.

Yes there will be an apparent difference in size from 1/2 ct to 5/8.

I`ll post a picture when I get a chance.

if you have MS word, you can draw 2 circles with these diameters (assuming you are talking about round diamond) to see the difference. Yes, the diff is very obvious if they are next to each other.

I`ve got a .61 ct SI1 G Ideal H&A with an average diameter of 5.53 mm that I can put next to a .47ct VS2 H Ideal H&A with an average diameter of 5.05 that will give you a close comparison in size.
I just had a .46ct with an exactly 4.95mm but it just went into a matched pair , but this should be close.

I have owned 2 diamonds........one was 5.5mm and the other was 6.06mm.....I could tell a huge difference in the size. They were both rounds.

Wow. That *is* noticeable. Learned something today. Since you guys do this all the time, what generally is the smallest difference the human eye can detect? 0.1mm? .05mm? Clearly this may vary from individual to induvidual, but any thoughts?

WOW! that is a noticeable size difference in just .5 mm

I too am curious how many mm diff. people can percieve?

I may have to choose to buy a large stone.
I wasn't sure it would be worth the few hundred dollars but it just may be.

You're the man Brad. I am still in the market for my stone. Sadly I would have to pay tax with you since I am in FL too.

And we don't make much money, which is why I am looking for something so small. And I have to have a plat setting as I am allergic to nickel.

Don't forget your Diamond Talk discount coupons. Combined with a great price on a platinum mounting might just outweigh the sales tax. Also you can come and see an assortment of fine quality ideal H&A's in person. I happen to have a nice selection of this size too.

If you're allergic to nickel, you could always opt for white gold with palladium. It'll be whiter than the nickel alloy white gold and cheaper than the platinum. They're are other differences between these two metals so you'd have to decide what you like when everything's laid out in front of you.

A point I wanted to make was that going up .5mm may mean that you'll be changing sizes of band width. When Michelle and I were at a jewellers this past weekend, she tried on a .61, a .48, and a .36 in the same style setting. The .61 looked quite thick on her finger/hand while the .36 was too small, while the .48 just seemed to fit (at least to me). Of course, I could be slightly biased since I already have the diamond (.46 measuring 4.99mm) and am hoping to have it set this week. Although she liked the .61, she's willing to go smaller as having a platinum band's more important to her (whew, I thought I almost had to call Rhino ).

yes I too have no idea what Brad meant by diamond talk discount coupons. And I have been a member for almost a year.

As for seeing it in person, we are way up in NE FL in Jacksonville.

I really want a platinum setting I think. ANd I will never put a wedding band with it I am sure. I like the look of the E ring alone.

In a perfect world I would spend under $2,000 for whatever I got. I want something
that does well in the HCA and has great symmetry. Whatever I pick I probably would never upgrade. I just don't want it to look like a "training diamond ring" ya know? I want something I won't get tired of as I want to wear it forever. I am old fashioned as is Kevin.

Some settings can make a diamond look bigger too. I like Edwardian styles and other things that catch interest.
I fear the Vatche' settings would make a smaller stone look to tiny. I don't mind a lower color grade as long as it doesn't look yellow to 90% of people face up.

Clarity only so it doesn't detract. I have seen SI1s where there is a spot of carbon in it (which technically you can't see from the top, but you can see it through the girdle. But it effects top light performance as the top has a dull darker area. That would not be acceptable). I am not hung up on a ct weight I just want a good spread but still cut so it rates high on HCA. I don't want to give up performance.

Feel free to email me Brad if you have something that fits the bill.
I tried last Nov to find something, but then Kevin got in an accident so we put it off.
Now we are hinting about engagements again in a big way. We have been together almost 6.5 yrs.

Who feels like she wants the moon. Gimme gimme I want to get married so badly now. But I don't want cost of an E ring to put it even farther down the road.

Those are gorgeous diamonds!

What color(s) are they?

I would LOVE to see a pic of one of your H&A diamonds next to a Rand diamond!

I hear ya! I've been with my boyfriend for almost 7 years and don't care to delay this whole process any longer because of a diamond. We'll be college grads in May and will have to pay off loans, find jobs, move somewhere....

I think this was just a cute, "Brad" way of telling you that he will be sure to give you (and others on DT) a good deal.

Nice to hear from some other people whose budgets are in the under 1 carat range! Sometimes I wonder if I am making a mistake going for quality over size, but to me somewhat smaller diamonds look just right for an engagment ring that will be worn every day.

I personally would like to have all that light return and flash instead of size.

I want a stone that will entertain me with LOTS of gorgeous flashes of white light and color.

Rather than a larger stone that is more like a Maul ring.

I don't even care about actual color or clarity ratings very much. As long as it doesn't affect what I just mentioned and doesn't look obviously yellow.

I just love the white light and rainbow show. So smaller is ok with me.

As I am trying to impress myself and be happy not anyone else.

It's hard not to get caught up in the size of diamonds that this forum buys/receives. I just finished looking through an ering thread on the jewellery forum that still made me reconsider trading up. There were SO many 1+ cts., I started getting an diamond inferiority complex ("meager little .462 . . ."(love that thousandsth placement on the cert. ).

As many have said before - she'll end up loving whatever you choose (and may I add, perhaps moreso once you start telling her all about why you chose that one and all the stress you had in deciding and sneaking about you did, etc., etc.)).

Buy what you can afford - remember, this is an luxury item; and buy what you like best (once all the factors are weighed). And then, try not to look back or you'll start second guessing yourself (case in point ). It sounds like you've got your feet on solid ground (both corpuscle and raech).

Wink:
I thought during the Clinton admin. They upheld the no tax status on internet orders.

My understanding was you have to claim mail order catalog purchases, but not internet buys. I hope I am not wrong.

And Raech is a girl.
short for Raechel.

I actually like between a 5mm -5.6mm sotne on my hand. I think 4.5mm is too small, but over 5.6mm is kinda big.

Don't get me wrong if a stranger was gonna give me a stone that was larger with no strings (like winning one) I would wear it.

But I can't see spending the money on one.
Gee, can you tell I am just too frugal?? The first stone Brad picked for me I love.

I am just not sure I can swing it price wise with an interresting plat setting.
I was so thrilled with the info and pics of diamond number one though that I almost cried.
