Hi all, Just thought I'd start a thread on diamond vendors I've bumped into here in Canada who were seemingly able to tell the difference between their elbow and an inclusion. Too many times the vendors I visit in Canada are too busy hawking their wares to give an honest answer, and too many times, they just don't seem to be very educated about diamonds in general (compared to the standard that we "seem" to get on DT). Ideally, the names posted here will be written about because of something special, that is, something they knew or would do that was of a much higher standard than the normal Canadian jeweler. It could be great service, plenty of knowledge, a willingness to accept that other diamonds are as great as theirs, cheap pricing, big inventory, or incredible skill with metal working. So here goes. While in Fredericton, NB this past summer, I talked with a fellow who runs the jewelry shop out of the University of NB student union building. Although I was hesitant at first, after speaking with him, he seemed to be fairly knowledgeable, and open to ordering me any diamond I might want. His prices were also very cheap for that area. I can't remember his name, but he is the only jeweler on that campus, and if you are in the area, you might want to look him up. |

RE : Friendly and possibly knowledgeable diamond vendors in Canada...
Another vendor (again the name escapes me - sorry) was located on Spring Garden road in Halifax. His shop was a tiny little out of the way place in the basement of a building on the Park Lane side of the street. He was very informative, had a very impressive portfolio of previous rings he had made, and he was very open to discussions of all aspects of diamonds. I was very impressed with him on a knowedge/personal level, but his prices didn't seem too special. The next time I'm in Halifax, I will be sure to drop in to talk to him some more, and I recommend you do the same if you are in the area. |

Hi Cinnamon, I spoke to Tom at Diamonds Specialties, (at least I think it was him) and he was semi-retiring at the end of July. He did say he would still work with his old clients on a personal basis, but I'm pretty sure he was shutting down the shop. As far as I know, his store in Fredericton is now operated by The Crazy Canuck, one of the biggest sports memorabilia dealers in North America. He even has a $25 000 baseball signed by Connie Mack, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Hank Greenberg, and a couple of other Hall of Famers! Boy I'd love to have that ball for my collection. But as far as Diamonds Specialties, I think they're done. |

In Winnipeg, we went to see a gentleman at Grant Park Mall - Simon Waller of Simon's Imports. He works mainly from referrals and has a beautiful shop, the only one I've noticed with a mix of lighting (incadescent (!), quartz halogen (I'm pretty sure), and fluorescent). Prices are comparable to the diamond I had already purchased from Jonathan at good old gold, and his certs are from HRD. Pretty knowledgable and a no BS kind of guy (not a big fan of platinum (and he'll tell you)- but only because the only alloys available to him are 5% palladium or iridium). He prefers to deal only in vg cuts (the top ranking from HRD). And I believe he does his own settings. Hope he'll qualify to other canucks as a good shop in Canada, shaun |

If your serious about diamonds, S.L.Maxfield & Assoc. in Belleville Ont. (they also work out of Toronto and New York) can supply diamonds at unbelieveably low prices. They also specialize in HPHT colored diamonds and these are certed by HRD,GIA or EGL. See www.roughdiamonddealer.co m |

Back to the topic.. "Jewellery by Isaac" in Toronto is a small jewellery shop but I do enjoy doing business with them. Peter or Isaac are both knowledgeable about diamonds and will go out of their way to get in whatever you want. ~song |

question for Song...
Can you give me more info about Jewellery by Isaac in Toronto? I'm just wondering the basics like where they are in the city - what kind of stock they have... and any other details about your experiences with them! If you'd prefer, feel free to PM me! thanks so very much!

I don't know how I missed your question Sandrea! Sorry. They are located in the North Toronto area (south of Yonge/Lawrence). They do not have a great deal of stock, but they can order in just about anything you like and go out of their way to provide it. They are one of a select few I trust in the city. I was very impressed with their knowledge, but moreso they provided that personal touch. I have purchased a number of items from them, including a Raymond Weil watch, which I love. I wouldn't hesitate to leave a diamond ring with them for repair/rhodium plating/etc., and it would be the first place I would consider, when buying a loose stone. When I have a need to see a lot of lovely rings displayed in a high end store, I head over to Samuel Kleinberg Jewellery (Bathurst/Lawrence area). I had a custom ring made for a ruby there and the work was top-notch. It's a great place to visit, although I find their sales staff a little pushy and not as well versed on diamonds as I would expect. If you want to be dazzled with the most gorgeous rings, this is definitely the place to go. Hope this helps ~song

If you are in Montreal, Quebec, I'd HIGHLY recommend
Barry, at Laurentien Jewellers on Champangeur Stree in Outremont, (Montreal), Quebec. I've been going there for 15+ yrs now, and he really knows his stuff. Very reasonable prices, and he never forgets what he's told you about anything you've ever asked about! Tell him Catherine sent you (yep, he knows who I am alrighty!) They can make you anything you ask for, and get most any stone you are in 'need' of! Hubby asked me "Is he giving you Diamond Miles yet???!" (They also have a store somewhere in Toronto, Ontario) |

Sandrea, Jewellry by Issac is located on Yonge Street about halfway between Eglinton and Lawrence. ![]() (edited to add that I haven't been in but would like to go one day!) |

thanks guys!
Wow! Do I have a fun idea for a Saturday "surprise" outing for the unsuspecting bf! Thanks for all the locations! Making note.... |

In Halifax, there is a store called Belgium Diamonds in the Xerox building downtown. It's a little intimidating since there are no windows, and you have to be buzzed in, but the jeweler I spoke with there was very friendly and very knowledgable. I didn't end up purchasing from him (I need to save up a bit more first!) but I would certainly recommend him. |

Re: Friendly and possibly knowledgeable diamond vendors in Canada...
Doesn't look like this thread is getting much attention...but here goes. I've been looking for a diamond in the GTA...one place recommended to me was Fantasy Gem-Mart. They're located off Dixon, near the airport. Has anyone heard about anything about them? Thanks so much! |

Re: Friendly and possibly knowledgeable diamond vendors in Canada...
In Calgary, I'd recommend Wong Kens. Super friendly and knowledgeable. They do fantastic custom work also. |

In Calgary, try Alberta Diamond Exchange. I've been meeting with Darren there and would buy with him in a heartbeat if I was looking for a stone only... unfortunately I am being difficult about settings (engagement ring) and he doesn't have anything that will meet my specs, so I'm likely going with one of the network jewelers here. Wong Ken's has some beautiful stuff, but they refuse to be budget-friendly and won't deal in the type of stones (reasonably priced eye-clean) I'm looking for. Not an issue if you've got the budget, I'm sure, so don't take this as a complaint! |
