Gems I've never heard of!
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 08-16-02 , 03:06 PM

I was up late last night searching for something (I don't even remember what now) and stumbled across the neatest website: www.acstones.com

There are loads of beautiful stones I've never even heard of! Like:

Amblygonite
Celestobarite
Clinohumite
Cuprite
Danburite
Enstatite
Rhodonite
Sphalerite
and lots of others......

And they're cut and carved in the most interesting ways. Very pretty pictures like these:
(Orange Sphalerite)

And my very favorite: coprolite--fossilized animal droppings. Paleontologists are very interested in these, but I've nver heard of them being used in jewelry.

I had to laugh when I saw someone mention coprolite. My in-laws are hardcore rock hounds (but not interested in jewelry/gemstones, for some reason)

In any case, we have tons of great coprolite specimens - big fossilized dinosaur droppings. LOL They were supposed to be donated to a museum, but because of a rift between the museum officials and my hubby's uncle, the family still has all of their collection. Every Christmas and birthday, I get a new rock from them. For this most recent birthday, they gave me a large piece of Tiger's Eye in the rough. It's beautiful... so shimmery - I can only imagine what it would be like cut and polished.

One of the most valuable and awesome things they have is a 1489 lb. piece of beautiful petrified wood. A whole section of a log - it's now the centerpiece of a rock garden by their porch. They had a hell of a time moving it from it's original location to the corner of their porch
