What can I get for $5K to $8K?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 08-09-02 , 06:49 PM

I need to buy an engagement ring. I only have around $5K to $8K to spend. I wish for over 1 carat and better than F or F color. Is that too much to ask with my budget?

The above message was filled out via an online form located here

You have some unanswered questions on your post.

But in short, you should be able to get a very nice diamond that meets your requirements.

You may want to check out www.pricescope.com and look at some pricing and different combinations of qualities.

Best of luck!

No, that's not asking too much at all. You can definetely get a 1 ct+ diamond, F color, ideal cut, set in a nice ring with that budget. You can probably even get 1.15 ct. if you want.

Have you tried pricescope.com? A great tool for pricing diamonds.

You should be able to get a 1 carat center stone plus smaller side stones with 8k that are nice

You would have a difficult time (if you were Canadian), purchasing a $5000.00 "over one carat" stone without major black inclusions that can be seen easily and without the aid of a 10x loupe. However, I assume you're American and the price range you just quoted appears to be right up DT's alley! ~inaudible mutter~

Most of the reputable vendor's here will most likely explain how important the cut is and how that supercedes even the choice of colour. F or E, or ~faints~ D (eegads) would be lovely, but keep your eyes peeled for the cut first.

Any jeweller worth their salt will also explain that the beauty of the stone is in the eye of the beholder. In mho, all four C's are important but if I had to choose it would be:
cut
clarity
colour
carat

I know of others more learned than myself who might change the order of importance, but if you do your research here, you'll find your perfect stone.

over a poorer cut quality F any day of the week.

Just my .02c

Hey, not fair! *l* I have no idea how to make the little .gif with the whip happen here, but if I could Rhino, it would be applicable right about now!!

Thanks for bringing my goods to the attention, atalantah.

To go back to the original question, it is definitely possible to stay under the budget of 8k with a 1ct. F-colour, good clarity. If you need to go under 5k however, you will definitely have to accept a lower cut or a smaller size.

Good luck with your search; I do hope that your destiny includes infinity

Live long,

Paul

I would much rather buy/give a .92ct nice stone than to break some magical 1ct barrier. My sister recently told me that she thought no E-ring under 1ct was really sufficient and that to her, a ring HAS to be over a carat. Then she saw the one I bought and while she thinks the stone is "smallish" its .826ct, she was amazed at the cut and clarity. I think that if it comes down to a 1.0x or a .9x stone...dont give up something better to break that barrier. Buy her the better stone, size isnt everything.....in diamonds

Destiny;

Go for Cut! It will make your diamond look bigger!
Consider the following SuperbCert options:

1. .91 F/VS-1 @ $5740
2. .94 F/VS-2 @ $5735
3. .94 F/VVS-1@ $7577

You'll get the 1-ct Look, at considerable savings
which you can then use to purchase a beautiful setting!

If you want to stay in the 1-ct area, here are some
SuperbCert choices for your consideration:

1. 1.00 G/VS-2 @ $6633
2. 1.05 F/SI-1 @ $6403
3. 1.07 G/SI-1 @ $6285
4. 1.13 F/SI-1 @ $7209

Don't be put of by an SI clarity grade. With our
state-of the art digital photography, you can actually
'see' the nature and location of the inclusions.
