Hi all,

I was touching on this in another thread but thought I would start a new one for this question.
http://www.bidz.com is an auction site. Was anyone here had any dealings with them? The original prices on the jewelry bug me. They have 5 minute auctions, which seems cool, but the original prices seem too high.
Let me know what you guys and gals think.

Neat cheap stuff!

I have purchased a few items on bidz.com, mainly inexpensive (under $100) items for gifts. Like eBay, they have different sellers. I agree that on the diamond jewelry, they have obscenely high "retail value", especially since most of the diamonds are I1-I2 (I never trust that designation, it's either an I1 or and I2).

But for gemstone jewelry, I love their 5 minute auctions! I just watch, some of the stuff is really cheap looking, but everything I have gotten is really quite nice. And they do have a return policy if you don't like what you receive.

I hope that helps!

Lizzy

Here's an example. Who would pay $25,000+ for this?

Lizzy,
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate your views. I stumbled on the site and found it interesting. Too bad the original prices are so sky high for the diamond jewelry. I wouldn't pay that much for any ring especially when it's clarity is so low .

Just goes to show us not to trust retail prices on one source's word alone.

Bad experience! Stay away from Bidz.com
Quote this post and reply to it Post#5 @ 12-16-05 , 11:51 AM

I would stay out of this bidz.com. I got a diamond ring for $800.00 which they says worth $5900.00. The quality of the diamond is terrible. I took it to a local certified jeweler for a second opinion and they said the quality is so poor that they don't even carry this. I told them how much I paid for this and they advised me to return it. I returned the product and it took Bidz.com 3 weeks after received the product to credit back money after deduct $120.00 for restocking fee. That is ripped off. DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR 100% MONEY BACK GUARANTEE! They makes money either way. For me, $120.00 is probably more than what they paid for the ring from China or Brazil. The value that they attach to the product is a laugh, DON'T GET TRAPPED - This is deceptive marketing and unethical. I am contacting the BBS and DA. Go back To Ebay - it is better choice!

I bought some items off Bidz. I was disappointed in the quality. I didn't buy anything expensive but I think most of their stuff is really junk. I will not buy anything else from there! I think the return policy is a little shady as well. Buyer beware!

As a consumer, and 3 year Bidz user, I can tell you that very little we have purchased at Bidz auction's has lasted more than a few months without having to be repaired at our local jewelers. We have purchased many rings, that after a few months, had to be melted down, because they were just unrepairable. The stones fall out of all types of settings, gold watches purchased ALL broke within weeks of use. We spent fom $20- to $500 on jewelery items. Hope this helps you out.

There are some terrific lessons on reading and translating fine print at their site.

Regular prices.
Asking for $25,000 is not the same as getting it.
A vendor can list whatever they want as their ‘regular’ price, even if it’s completely ridiculous, even if they have no intention of EVER actually realizing that price in a sale and even if they’ve never sold a single one for that price or anywhere near it. A lot of cities and states have rules about this but you can bet that these guys are incorporated in a place that does not.

Comparable prices.
They can recommend you compare their goods against anything they want. Saying that an item being sold is less expensive than something sold elsewhere is perhaps true but completely irrelevant if it’s not the same item. A Rolex could be correctly described as a Swiss made gold colored watch that keeps pretty good time. It’s easy to find other watches with this exact same description for a whole lot less money. Does this make it a fair comparison?

SI1-I2 clarity
“We offer a 100% money-back guarantee if the item is not as described.”
“Some restrictions may apply.”
Anyone who thinks the above means SI1 clarity isn’t paying attention but it’s often worse than you think. The ‘restrictions’ include that the grading must be off by more than one grade in color and/or clarity to qualify for a return without triggering the restocking fee. This means that I3 still meets the above description! If you were expecting SI1, this could lead to a serious disappointment. I’ve seen dealers where the restriction includes that it must be off by 2 grades in BOTH clarity and color. This means, for example, a stone described as SI1-SI2, G-H could be I1, L and still qualify as accurately described under their rules!

Ctw.
This stands for ‘carats total weight’. 2.00ctw. is not the same thing as 2.00cts., which stands for ‘carats’ although both can be correctly called a two carat diamond ring. The difference in value between a 2.00cts. SI1, G and a 2.00ctw. SI1-SI2, G-H as described above can be considerable, perhaps as much as 100 times.

My husband recently uprgraded my engagement ring on bidz. I was very excited about our purchase, while waiting for the ring to arrive I decided to research bidz and became very nervous regarding all of the negative feedback. My ring is a beautiful whitle gold full carrot engagement ring. The retail price listed for this ring was just under ten thousand dollars, we payed twelve hundred for it plus one hundered and seventy in duty and taxes as we are from Canada, just shy of fourteen hundred dollars total. My ring arrived two days ago, I only had it a few hours and ran to the nearest jeweler for his opinion. He stated that it was quite a good quality ring and everything was real, he also told me that it would retail for around thirt five hundred dollars. In my opinion the only thing bidz does wrong is exagerate the retail price, however I still got a beautiful engagement ring and it saved us over two thousand dollars dolars, I think we got excellent value for our dollar. I will now coninue to use Bidz in the future.
