Cutting an emerald

Michael_E is cutting my 80 carat untreated Colombian emerald.
He's too busy faceting to post right now, I hope he doesn't mind me sharing this photo.

This is where the experience of the lapidary artist is so important.

Patience is a virtue. I hope that Michael_E gets round to faceting very soon.

Cutting emeralds
Quote this post and reply to it Post#8 @ 03-18-13 , 08:56 AM

The fact is that emeralds are usually cut to maximize carat weight rather than to maximize sparkle. Our friend Michael Edgett and I have partnered to change that paradigm. In addition, no treatments are being used to mask the stone's blemishes, inclusions or cracks. I'll post more photos and details of the entire process once I have these newborn gemstones in my possession.

Jewelry plans

The matched rectangles will make a spectacular pair of earrings. The princess cut will make a nice ring, and the other rectangle will become a pendant. I'll post these creations when they are finished. As always, the cut stones show up much better in person than in photographs. These gemstones have some carbon inclusions (beauty marks), but Michael's precision faceting has given them plenty of bling/flash/fire. No treatment of any kind used here.
