Should I keep this diamond ring?

Hello friends,

My fiancee and I recently bought an estate ring in a small jewelry store in NY. We are considering whether to keep it or return it.

Here's the issue:

After bringing it home I realized it was originally from Zales (it says The Zales with a small diamond inside and then plat). It is a .61 VS1 (ugh - don't know the color scale, sorry) in their octaganal cut. The setting is platinum. It is very pretty, though doesn't have the fire of the European diamond I had originally (this is a replacement engagement ring - long story).

My two questions: 1. the ring was $1900. Sound fair? 2. I'm super worried, because other boards say that Zales settings are really crappy - and that the diamond is likely to fall out. How concerned should I be about that?

I'm not "wedded" to it, so to speak - at least not yet. But I was looking for an estate, .60 or bigger squarish-looking solitaire or solitaire with baguettes for $2,000-$2400.

I'm worried about it being from Zales. But I also worry that, if I return it, I won't ever find a ring in my price range. Thoughts?

Hi. Tips for buying in the secondary market that might apply here.
- "estate" sellers can also be pawn brokers.
- jewelers are in business to make a profit.
- Zales is not known for using GIA caliber VS clarity diamonds.
- Appraisals are not grading reports- Don't believe 'stats' unless there is a GIA or AGS grading report for the diamond.

What paperwork did the seller offer to prove the diamond is VS Clarity?
edited to add: if you're worried about the integrity of the setting take it to a goldsmith/jeweler to have the prongs checked.
